Dying Hujoo ABS Plastic?

Postby Kadyssa » Sat Mar 26, 2016 10:00 am

I'm getting a Hujoo Phoebe soon, but I'm looking for a color between the white and the gray. What is the best way to dye ABS? Is there a quick, easy way to just stain it a few shades? I really want to aim for a field-mouse color, dusty gray-brown, lighter than the Hujoo gray.

Thanks!

Have you tried rit dye? Automotive spray is my go to but the colors are limited with Duplicolor.

Over in the Nano Freya thread Vetinari posted a link to an abs dying method:

It seems the trick with ABS is 15% acetone and keeping it below boiling, which makes sense since ABS is a thermoplastic. I plan to give this a shot on my Hujoo Hujoo when I find where she's been hidden away in this house... (I want a grubby green goblin for Jareth, even though he isn't that Jareth... )

Never tried it myself, but your post reminded me of the freya thread.

Thanks guys! Rit was what I was thinking of trying, but I really didn't want to order my Phoebe unless I found out that ABS really could be dyed. I've used automotive vinyl spray on my Monster High customs, but only one of them hasn't had chipping problems, so I'm keeping that as a last resort.
