For those amazing fine lines representing the fine cracks in lips is there a particular method for getting them so fine or is it all down to the smallest brush you can get?

Small brush is good start. Games Workshop and other miniature game-shops sell insany small brushes.

Also lots and lots of practice helps, as you'll need steady hand. And on my experience paint (watercolor or acrylics) should be more dry than wet - but in case of acrylics still thin enough.

I was afraid practice would come into the mix. XP

I take the watercolor pencil route. I'm just terrible with paint brushes.

I'll keep that in mind. I'll probably go that route as I have a very shaky hand.

Tiny, thin liner brushes are the way to go. You can go into these tiny crevices that a watercolor pencil can't go through. Once you've practiced enough, it's easier to do a brush stroke than it is to draw the lines out.
