Ears! Stop being so derpy D:

Postby NaomiGnosis » Wed May 23, 2012 3:05 pm

Ok so when we got our Monster High create-a-monster kits I made my Naomi Lesley, who I love but still want to customize quite a bit (new clothes, new wig, possible face-up). But my big problem is she's supposed to be a wolf/sea monster hybrid... but I can't get her ears to look right in her bushy magenta hair. It's so frustrating! I adore the ears, but it just doesn't work. They just slide down to the sides of her head and stick out like sore thumbs...

So here's my question.

Does anyone know if there's a way to anchor these little ears to the wig cap, or perhaps to the head, where normal ears would be? I know it would probably mean cutting or drilling holes to put the little loop through, but I can't think of anything else! No amount of tightening, pulling, or pushing secures her ears where I want them. Or, if they do not shift down, the clip of the ears is clearly visible in her hair and it drives me crazy. I love taking photos and I don't want to photo Naomi with her ears looking like they're tacked-on.

Why couldn't they make them snap-on ears? D:

Anyhow... ideas? It would be super appreciated.

Cheers,
Naomi

Edit!
I found a solution to my own problem. Yep, already. This post got me thinking. I've removed the fold-over parts on the ears but left the little pegs. I then used a screw to gently put a hole in her head (messed up the first one, but no big deal, her hair hides it and it's just a dark spot) and just pop the ears in place carefully. It so works! Pictures in a few.

I think someone else on the forums also did the same thing, but we do love photos! <3
A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. BJD collecting is as customizable as the dolls themselves. Do whatever pleases you the most, because otherwise, why do it at all? All for the 'Gram Bitches love the 'Gram.

Here we go. :)

A good before picture of her and my Ghoulia. Her hair was super poofy that day, I hadn't tamed it yet.

A picture of the tools I used. I used the permanent marker to carefly dot where I wanted the first ear to be. I then used the screw hook to start the hole, then used the larger screw to widen it. Before I removed the screw, I pulled it so that one rivet popped on it (this forces the hole bigger, I did it very carefully). I then un-screwed the screw and clipped off the tab of the ears (seen laying in this photo). Once all that was done, I squeezed her head to open the hole a tiny bit and plugged the ears in. They now go in much easier and in the future I'd like to get a nice adhesive to anchor them there.

First photo of her new ears - kinda orange from the desk.

A stand-up photo agains the computer (too dark!)

And finally, a decent outdoors photo!

I absolutely love it and I'm glad I used this solution.

To anyone else wanting to try it, take extra care you get the holes aligned or your ears will end up crooked and wonky looking.

Cheers,
Naomi

I use a Liv wig for my wolfie girl, but I had the same problem. What I ended up doing was punching a hole through the plastic cap with a bead reamer, trimmed away the excess plastic with an X-Acto, and used a dab of hot glue to secure the ear inside the cap.

That sounds like a good idea too, and I suppose it could be used. I haven't yet found a Liv wig that I like with her. I really like the magenta hair color. I do like the idea of anchoring the ears to the wig tho! But then again, with this way, her ears can go with any hair. Thanks :D

Cheers,
Naomi

I love how you put the ears on the side of her head. Totally cool!

The hot glue just holds them in place because the plastic cap is just a little thicker than the MH wigs.

with chepi, i removed the clip part from the ears, slit tiny holes in her head, and jammed them in, with some plastic glue to seal them together.
i'm actually not too happy with it, they gap out from her head a fair bit. eventually i might take her apart and attempt putting magnets inside her through the neckhole.
