Thin velcro=sticky needles. Help?

Postby WhiteDove01s » Thu Aug 22, 2013 4:45 pm

Still on sewing marathon, so keeping this short-ish. This is my first time working with the newer thin velcro and, after applying it, I really do like to tack the stuff in place for extra assurance it won't come off. However, the velcro isn't the only thing getting tacked. My sewing needles are becoming very sticky from the glue on the velcro, and it doesn't like to rinse off easily either. This is really slowing down my sewing! Help!

Try rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol to take the sticky off the needle.
Or set aside a needle just for velcro and other glue-enhanced things.

They do make 'sticks to itself' super thin velcro that has no glue to it. That's what I use now to avoid exactly what you're talking about. I get it at Walmart, it's got the loops on one side and hooks on the other.

*still awake, still sewing, getting sleepy* I'll have to look for that next time. I just got the cheapest kind I could find on Amazon, which was Scotch brand. It's VERY sticky stuff, which is somewhat useful for placement... when I'm not trying to unstick it from my fingers, but rather bad for tacking in place.

When I have stuff to sew in place that wants to wiggle, I use a little bit of an Elmers (or any brand) glue stick. For human-sized clothing, I use it for jeans hems. I've also used it for zipper placement.

and it does not seem to gum up my needles at all.

I already make extensive use of white glue. I've actually made 'working copies' of patterns and then glued them to the fabric. The result is an easy to handle, flat, stiff pattern piece that doesn't try to deform or flop around when I'm sewing. It makes seams really easy... though it does make any gathering or inset sleeves a slight pain in the rear. It's basically an experiment that I thought of after doing paper-pieced quilts and that I hope to refine further as I go.

I've found that running the needle back and forth through an emery bag removes most of the junk. :)

Emery bag, something else I had a decade ago that I need to replace. Mine was a little strawberry that was sewn on the side of a pincushion that looked like a tomato. XD No idea where it went. Adding to Amazon list. For now, the alcohol and setting aside a 'designated velcro needle' are helping... as well as sewing the patterns mostly up and saving velcro for last on more than one at a time.
