Pop Sculpture arrived today (21Apr2011), and it really is very, very good !!!
Pop Sculpture is a book about modeling in clay over an armature, making molds, casting
wax into the molds, finishing the wax sculpt, molding it, then casting in resin. Even though
the emphasis is on figurines and statuettes, it has the information about silicone rubber molding
and resin casting that the other BJD-making books do not have. I am very happy to add this
book to my doll-making reference library!!!
Yoshida Style Ball Jointed Doll Making Guide is very good for making an OOAK BJD of air-dry clay.
It does not cover mold making of any kind. However, it is an incredible BJD-making tutorial !!!
Learning To Be A Doll Artist by Martha Armstrong-Hand is all about making a porcelain BJD
with ball joints. It covers every aspect of making a doll, from concept drawings, to modeling the doll
in oil-clay over a wire armature, to making plaster rough shell molds which are used to make carving
wax patterns, which in turn are used to design the joints, and refine the parts. Those refined parts
are then used to make slip casting molds for casting porcelain slip. She covers firing the doll, china
painting, designing the tensioning, assembly of the doll, making clothing, making wigs, making shoes,
and displaying the finished multi-media work-of-art. LTBADA does not cover silicone rubber molding,
or resin casting. Hopefully, it will be reprinted again. It is a classic BJD-making book, and should
not be out-of-print, as it currently is.
