When you look at the military/action-adventure/media property side of the hobby and it's almost totally opposite. I see more women in the vintage GI Joe part of the hobby but at sites like One Sixth Warriors, the membership is overwhelmingly male. Of course, a lot of those folks will claim that "1/6 scale historical action figures" aren't dolls and I've even seen some incredibly heated and long-winded diatribes defending that position but that's exactly what they are.

Didn't Hasbro coin the phrase 'action figure' purely because they knew little boys wouldn't wanna play with it if it were a doll?

They knew that parents would not buy their boys dolls. Boys don't care. They'll play with anything.

I'd never heard that one but the most common story is pretty much the one Googly and Pups were discussing above. Basically, Don Levine, who was head of development at Hasbro at the time, decided to use the term action figure as way to get around the discomfort parents and retailers had about buying and selling what would become GI Joe as a "boy's doll". There was more to it than that, including a standing edict from Hasbro president and chairman, Merrill Hassenfeld that he "didn't want to be in the doll business".
Over the years, I've seen people use this as an example of a cynical marketing ploy but I've always felt it was simply a matter of selling to your audience... respecting rather than antagonizing their sensibilities. GI Joe was such an expensive line to create that its failure could have wrecked Hasbro so it's understandable that they wouldn't want to scare off potential customers.
