LaDoll over Premiere cracks, LaDoll over a base of Rigid Wrap and crumpled paper doesn't, hmmm.

I was out at the craft stores the other day and I found out that Hobby Lobby carries the LaDoll and Premiere as well, plus it was cheaper there than it was at Micheals (by a couple of dollars).

Well I was at Micheals and the Art Supply Warehouse trying to figure out what type of clay to use for my next sculpture that I will do this summer. I want to have it Bronzed when I am done, because It will go in a contest this year... so many choices....

Bronze works with the lost wax method. Haven't been able to do it myself yet.

Unless it's polymer what ever clay you get, modeling or air dry, get white so it won't turn anything else terra cotta or neon pink. Apoxie Sculpt is an exception. Don't cheap out either, go middle of the road or with a brand you've had success with before. I use a lot of this company's stuff http://www.activaproducts.com/index.php mostly because I can find it.

Sculpting products I would swear by are Premiere clay, Apoxie Sculpt, Fimo brand polymer clay, Sculptamold, Rigid Wrap, and the wire mesh from the Rigid Wrap people. Most of my successful critters have been made from one or the other.

I have found Fimo to be harder to knead and a bit more crumbly, Sculpey warms up easier in my hands. They do have different baking temperatures as well. I never put any thought to a difference until I got some Fimo, fake marble and granite just colors with sparkles, and found it behaved different from the Sculpey. I was doing some push molding and the Fimo was harder to press in to the mold to make it get the details. Once it baked it was fine. I'm not against Fimo, I just don't like it as much. I don't know if you can mix brands in projects.

As for Sculpey or ScupleyIII or what ever funky names they give it I don't pay much attention. I did a batch of heads out of a large brick of flesh color and another out of the white that comes in a box and they came out fine. I've used their mold making clay with good results for push molds. Earlier in my sculpting adventures I used the bend and flex but it broke after awhile. The eraser clay works well enough, it just doesn't erase like a real eraser. I also discovered you can blend together colors of Granitex but it says not to cane with it.
