SOOM "Tinies" not true tinies???

Postby Wardah » Tue Jun 15, 2010 9:22 am

From the pictures I have seen it seems like the dolls people call SOOM "Tinies" are much bigger than a Tiny and closer to the height of a 1/6 doll but the proportions are more like a child 1/3. To make things even more confusing they recently added a new size to their MDs that is supposed to be MSD. Even though I haven't seen pics yet I imagine they will look like older kids of their 1/3 dolls. I could be wrong but it seems they are trying to make their MDs work together scalewise.

I think there has long been a debate between what should fall under Tiny and what should fall under 1/6 scale. I, personally, think that the BBB dolls like Bei and Bao and Isabella should fall under 1/6 scale because they are 26cm tall and, while not adult proportioned, are more slender build and less child-like than other resin 1/6 dolls - but I've been in the minority on that.

Again, personally, I consider it "tiny" if it's in the Pipos animal doll (about 5 inches tall) on down - which would leave all those Yo-sd type dolls in a sort of limbo I suppose.

Since I've never seen one of the SOOM small size in person I really can't speak as to their tininess - but if they are anything around the size of my CH Ange Ai, then honestly, I just can't call them tiny to myself :)

Soom tinies are Yo-SD size. This puts them with the Yo-SD which was the first "tiny" IIRC, the DZ BBs, the Domuya "tinies" and several others. This is 25-28 cms.

Yeah, I think it's high time for reclassification of all the BJD from SD on down. After all, with dolls ranging upward to 90cm now, SD is too broad a spectrum alone. It's down right confusing to newer collectors.

SD, MSD, YoSD are more of something that applies to Volks dolls rather than all BJD's. People just take those terms and apply them to other BJD's, which is why it gets confusing when you try to fit an odd-sized doll in one of those three categories. Hence, I tend to refer to my 58-65cm dolls as 1/3rd scale instead of SD.

Just to add even more confusion to the mix - soom has the "mini gem" which IS a 1/6 scale doll - she's a little taller than a barbie, and loves to steal their clothes.

Sooms teenies are 27cm, like YO sized, and meant to be children. so they fall into the VERY broad catagory of tiny. Sooms new MSD's are supposed to be tweens and look porportionate next to the SD sized dolls. Like one big happy family! technically tinies are considered to be anything under 35cm. which is definately tiny comared to a 60cm doll!
luckily for us, THIS board has separated the 21 to 35cm dolls and the under 21cm catagories to make is easier for us since we include action figures here too.
yeah......>.>......my math brain doesnt like the classification system in place....the use of the word "scale" as in 1/3 and 1/4 isnt mathmatically acurate. Mature MSD's are 1/4th scale as adults, 1 inch = 4 inches. Immature MSD's would be technically 1/3rd scale because they are children and thus shorter than the adults. calling them 1/4th scale means you would have a 10year old that was like 6 FEET TALL! O.O
1/6th classification has the same issues between the mature adult and chibi sculpts (often called YO). then you have tween sculpts this size too (my RS Bei for example).
the teenie tinies...well they are a world unto thier own, arent they! lol and they keep getting smaller (have you seen the SQUEE?)
Every doll company has thier own terms for the various sizes and this does lend to the confusion, but I think it is highly unlikely that any universal terms of measurement would be accepted by companies or collectors as there are lots of different opinions on that topic!

hooooo.....
>.>.....I blame the above paragraph on the math brain......I was just going to say that I think the catagory of "tiny" should be split into 2 catagories myself. 20 to 35cm for the YO and 1/6th scale, and 20cm and under for the teensy little ones.

ps. the MATH BRAIN says that RS Bei is about 1/5 scale, unless she is really tall for her age! lol
