What's up with those nekomimis?

The first time I heard the term 'nekomimi' was when I started reading MADh Vinyl and I had to google it to know what it was. And when in one comic Anna Marie was searching for Hyatt (I think) saying 'Nyaa' in every frame, I thought it was short for Enya, a character that had just passed by in the comic before that lol.

I LOVE nekomimis now, but I do wonder - how come everybody in dolly world seems to know what they are? Do dolls and nekomimis go hand in hand? Can anybody explain to me how this works? Since doll companies sell cat ears and stuff.. and there's a big market for them.. I love them but I just don't get it! How come they're so big in dolly world?

Well, Nekomimi basically go back to the universe of Japanese Manga and Anime. The Japanese love cute things, and there is just nothing cuter than a kitty girl of some sort, particularly if she has big boobs and short skirts LOL. Needless to say, most of them are in cartoons/comics aimed at guys, not girls - but we all enjoy them to some extent. They are usually gullible, cute and make you feel protective of them.

Anyway, there is a pretty big crossover between fans of anime/manga and doll collectors - particularly in the BJD arena, so that's why you will find a lot of character types from those media crossing over into dolls. Nekomimi aren't alone, you'll also see a lot of Kitsune (japenese fox spirits) and other type critters as dolls too But at least around here, because of K2 in large part, Nekomimi are the biggies!

I saw the term briefly on the first time I visited this site, actually, and it spawned a hysterical search of the board...and I found MADh Vinyl, and stayed up all night reading it...
(For those interested, "nekomimi" is literally "cat" and "ear", so even though I hadn't seen the term before, when I saw it, I really freaked out... )
