Have to post this here then

Postby animeangel09189 » Wed Oct 26, 2011 9:13 am

long story short joined a site posted on the forum do one reply and then my topic got pushed to page 7. This wouldn't be bad except with this site there is NO WAY to know when you get a comment on your topic and most of what is on the pages before it is stuff like "school sucks" and "figment is killing my grades" ..... Juivnal stupidity at least here when I post a topic and it gets pushed down I know its because of a GOOD topic has overshoweded it and its lost its spark after say a week

So my question is this

So I'm working on an entry for the seventeen magazine contest http://figment.com/contests/seventeen/
and I'm already at a lot of words and stuff but then I got thinking.

IF you win if you wanted are you allowed to still use the story you submitted for other things? Like say you really liked what you wrote and 500 words isn't enough would you be allowed to extend it and make it into a novel? or once its submitted thats it your done you can't ever use that idea again or expand on the existing story?

Figured I'd ask before I before to emotionally invested in this

My second and third questions are doll related

1. What makes resin soul/ boobie the " yeah thier ok but...well" doll in the BJD world?

2. Resin soul vs dollzone which is better in YHO? because of some pictures on here I find myself falling for resinsoul faces thing is I know their bodies are netrous for being loosely strung

1. You need to check the rules of the contest - and that means ALL of the fine print. In my experience, most stories when you enter contests like this end up belonging to the magazines, and I'm not sure if that would allow you to take it any further. Victoria Victrix would know the most about this sort of thing as she is a published author.

2. (your 1.) Snobbery. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Bobobie/Resinsoul except that they won't send you into bankruptcy to buy one and for some people that means they are inferior. They have some of the most engaging and lovely facial sculpts out there and their body sculpts are getting better and better all the time. There are people who buy those brand exclusively - and there are people like myself and Cirquemom who have expensive "premium" dolls (she has an actual Volks as well as an Elfdoll, I have an Iplehouse and an Unoa) yet also have and love our Bobobie/RS dolls as much - and sometimes more.

3. (your 2.) Again, this is going to be a matter of taste. I probably have as many DZ as I have BBB/RS and I like both or I wouldn't own them! Yes, BBB/RS are often loosely strung - but that's easily taken care of by either tightening the stringing or restringing - which sounds scarey but is actually quite easy. I tend to like DZ hands a bit better - just sculpting preference really, and I worship the DZ tan color - which they have unfortunately discontinued. other than that, it once again comes down to what do you really like?

Never buy a doll because of it's cost thinking it will be better than another. Buy the doll that when you look at it says "take me home". I end up buying dolls that once I see them I can't get them out of my mind. I keep going back and looking at them, and I am distracted by this until I hit the "Purchase" button. Cost only counts in terms of what I have in my pocket - and usually I can find the dolls I want second-hand or by layaway :)

Hope that helps :)

My most beautiful doll is a Resin Soul Mei in Dark Tan. I love everything about her.

I am her third owner, but she is here to stay.

But, what makes a doll special is what the doll means to you. My favorite doll, is one of the least expensive-but she also has the most stuff. Cordie, my Bitty Bitsu nekomimi, is my favorite and goes everywhere with me.

This is my favorite picture of her.

I don't own any Dollzone, but I have held one and they are lovely dolls.

Find what appeals to you and if at all possible see one in person and hold it.

I love Bobobie and ResinSoul dolls and they are gorgeous but Richila is right...It's which doll that speaks to you...

My favorite doll is my lovely Haruka she's got the most items clothing wise and is spoiled rotten. I love my little mini-me as my parents called her.

This is one of my favorites of her excluding some shots with Kaname.

Chances are you can find your answer to your contest question in the contest submission guidelines. As Grey mentioned, be sure to read through all of the fine print :)

As for Bobobie/Resinsoul...I own a BBB tiny and have done commissions on tons of Resinsoul/BBB over the years. I also own some of the 'bigger' name BJD, (Iplehouse, Fairyland etc...I had a Volks as well at one time). I'm not going to say that there is no difference between BBB/Resinsoul and some of the other, more expensive companies. Some, (not all), of the 'big' BJD companies offer dolls that offer more complicated in terms of joining and engineering, their sculps are much more detailed and their resin has a greater weight to it than BBB/Resinsoul. But BBB/Resinsoul dolls are very, very charming in their own right-I love my tiny BBB just as much as my more expensive dolls and my heart melted the first time I worked on a Song :D . They offer great, basic BJD with lots of personality and I almost always recommend them to people just starting out in the hobby who are looking for an afforable doll.

As for DZ vs Resinsoul...I find that DZ pose a bit more easily, and they feel a bit heavier, (which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending lol), but Resinsoul offers fun things like fantasy parts and a wide variety of resin colors and their loose stringing is easily fixed, (you're going to have to restring any BJD eventually so think of it as pratice)

The best advice you can get is to go with what doll you like the best!

But watch out BBB dolls are like potato chips! I honestly like them better then most other companies, but that is just because I constantly fall in love with their little faces and just can't help but want to bring them home! I feel some how I'll be like Cirquemom and have a small army out waiting for the mail man here shortly!

And just in case you needed more persuasion... here is another photo of the lovely Evie and Nia. :D

A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. BJD collecting is as customizable as the dolls themselves. Do whatever pleases you the most, because otherwise, why do it at all? All for the 'Gram Bitches love the 'Gram.

You'll probably be signing over rights to your story by submitting it, whether or not you win the competition. That's what most of the writing competitions I've looked to enter said.

As for BBB/RS, I think it's elitism, same as the complete dismissal of Hujoo and anything other than the Almighty Resin. On BBB vs DZ, neither is "better", it's all a matter of personal opinion. I have a laundry list of BBB/RS dolls I love but I have yet to see a DZ that makes me want to break open the piggy bank. Choose the doll you fall in love with, not the company that makes it.

I ditto what's already been said. It's not about the company that makes the doll, it's about how you feel about the sculpt. I have 4 ResinSouls, and my first DZ is on layaway. My friend has a Dollzone MSD, and I've handled him a bit... My 'IMHO' is a preference for ResinSoul, but it's entirely about one's own preferences. After all, it's not the rest of the community that is going to be loving your doll, it's you. And FYI, the RS/BBB mini discussion on that elitist board is into Thread #10, so there's plenty of love for RS/BBB. From my understanding, (correct me if I'm wrong, guys) but DZ hit the scene with the same stigma, of being "cheap" and "inferior" compared to some of the other big names out there.

"cheap" and "inferior" (when they're clearly not) sounds more like "we're afraid of your competition in the doll market."
