Sad is showing up in a Count Chocula costume and no one knowing who it is. The thought of a vampire with cacao lust might be something. In My Best Friend is a Vampire the living vampires get by with pig's blood.

I'm about half way to figuring out how someone could be born with the right set of stuff to be a day walker.

Well for Daywalkers like Blade of the Marvel series. His mother was pregnant when she was bitten by a vampire.

I haven't read Twilight so could someone fill in a bit on Esme (Edward's kid if that's her name) since I can't remember if Bella was still human around her time of birth.

Esme's Edward's "mom," the kid is "Renesme." Or however you spell it. Bella was human for the conception and pregnancy and was turned immediately after the birth because it would have killed her. None of the vampires in Twilight are damaged by the sun though....they just sparkle. For whatever reason. And only the males are somehow fertile.

There's also Vampire Hunter D, son of a powerful vampire father and a human mother. Ceased aging at maturity and has the full set of vampiric powers, can be weakened by the sun but far less so than a full vampire (and D in particular less than other Dhampyrs cause he's special), can drink blood and feels vampiric bloodlust but doesn't require it in order to survive. Also has a demon inhabiting his left hand but that's probably unrelated.

And of course my personal favourite - Spike of Buffy fame. Actually catches fire in sunlight; be it the direct or most-of-the-UV-filtered-out-through-glass kind. And yet he manages to run around in the daytime by hiding underneath a blanket! Since as we all know, the shade is much more effective sunscreen than a solid surface...

I am fond of the Buffy vampires - they seem to have a good mix of supernatural superpower vs weakness ratio going on.

Though another suggestion for the daywalking - magical talisman or exposure to some form of magical radiation?

(Though much as I hate to admit knowledge that vampires ...sparkle. I think that trait actually predates Twilight, I've got vague memories of one of the classics from way back mentioning sparkles and beauty wrt vampires.)

If you remember where you saw that I'd love to know what it was, I don't remember ever hearing of something like that before.

Maybe The Vampyre by John Stagg, Vampyre by Byron/John Polidori, Varney the Vampire, or Carmilla have sparkles? Those were among the big stories before Stoker and Dracula rewrote the public imagination. Project Gutenberg should have them for free.

Dresdenverse White Court vampires maybe? A bunch of vampire offspring that feed on emotions (lust for them). Only shows vampirism near maturity, fully becomes vampire(or incubus/succubus) on first kill. Was mentioned to glow faintly when feeding or utilizing Vampiry powers and daywalk sans sparkle.

Hah oh gods! Sorry guys my memory is a bit sieve like on this topic... The only things I remember about the book are my own surprise that it was considered a "classic" and that one of several vampire characters was considered ancient enough that he/she was so beautiful it had a kind of sparkle to it - which I admit resonated uncomfortably when all the fuss about Twilight happened!

I love Vampire Hunter D! Fun stuff. Both movies were good, though I tend to prefer Bloodlust.

Heh yeah, me too. The books are good too, I keep meaning to read more of them but there's like a million of them.
