The place for those OT discussions that you just HAVE to share in a doll themed forum.

I agree that the DS is MUCH more fun but when I need specific resin comparisons or something, DoA is the place to be. I don't know, I visit both forums for different reasons. I definitely prefer the DS for the fun though ^^

It's alright to browse there, but that place is full of crazy.

QFT

I go to some very specific topics. The "Over 30" and "Over 50" threads, the commissionable galleries (I like to see what other people are sewing to get ideas) the Sewing Forum and the Marketplace.

A lot of the other topics range from :o to  to  for me. Occasionally I will look at them, just to remind myself why I don't read them.

I found another doll forum: http://bjd.sensiblycrazy.com/dollhouse/index.php (WorldWide Dollhouse) and they seem very friendly as well.

I've been at DoA for almost four years now, and I still have more posts here (which is a much newer forum) than there.

When I do post on DoA, it's either to discuss general doll-specific issues or just to address something I feel needs addressing. I talk about Cherry all the time, but I never mention her Moxie/Liv hybridness, just her wigs, eyes, clothes, face-up, etc. So they can't bust me for off-topic chat if I'm talking in an on-topic fashion. I could never ever post photos of her there, though, no matter how pretty she is (and she outshines half the OMG holy resin dolls there, so there).

Most people know me there more for my KiSS dolls than my real-life ones. Go fig.

DoA definitely has its uses, especially if you are even slightly interested in resin. The two best reasons for joining are the database and the box opening gallery. Anytime I feel interest in a new doll I automatically go there to see what it really looks like. Company pictures don't always do justice for the doll. Owner pictures, on the other hand, can usually give you a good feel for what you may be actually getting and what you can do with it.

On top of V V's post (same forum threads, yep, yep): Additionally, I try to keep my nose clean over there to have continued access to the tutorials and other information, as well as the MP. I've met modders and found out about techniques that saved me a LOT of time... and in one case saved me from damaging a doll unknowingly!

But, as my doll interests have developed (I only started with dolls around the first of 2010!), I find the dolls I DO collect are more and more 'off topic' at DOA. So I find myself spending more and more time on other boards (like here!).

I have yet to actually own a polyurethane doll, and if I ever do get one, I don't want to have to worry if it meets the 1203985120394587123094 points of criteria specified on DoA (which are subject to abrupt change in any case, so a doll that's on-topic on Friday might be off-topic on Monday). The real sticking point for me? That whole "Asian aesthetic" thing.

I'll stop now before I begin ranting. It's their playhouse and when I'm there, I try to behave properly. I don't always succeed, but I do try. However, I much prefer DS, where I can be who I really am and nobody tells me to shut the fsck up or threatens to ban me if I don't talk the party line.

I also tend to hang out in a few specific threads, and then lurk like nobody's business in the customization and sewing subforums. My two favorite threads are the ResinSoul large and mini discussion threads because a)most of my dolls fit into those threads, and b)everyone is so friendly there. In fact, quite a few are also members of DS, such as Almy and Cirquemom. -waves-

Granted, I don't think that their criteria is all that horrendous. I do think there are some dolls that were unfairly rated off-topic, due to that aforementioned "Asian aesthetics" clause, but it's well-known that DoA is a bit elitist.

I do have a tip for anyone who would like to join: Lurk in a thread for a while, before joining the conversation. Read a few pages back, get familiar with the active posters. And for heaven's sake, stay away from the "Debate" threads if your opinion doesn't match the norm. I saw one unfortunate soul bring down the wrath of the nine hells on her head for stating something that most other members disagreed with, and there was a whole five pages worth of people calling her out. It's all well and good to be a rebel, and have different opinions from everyone else, but that's when Mom's advice of 'if you don't have anything nice to say' applies. It's known as the Den of Kittens for a reason. Folks get butthurt over there way too easily, but it IS a useful source of tips, tricks and tutorials, as well as member feedback. If you're a thief or a scammer, DoA will expose you sooner rather than later. Likewise, if you're reliable and pleasant to deal with, your praises will be sung.
