As far as I know, my dolls don't creep anyone out, although one of my son's college friends made a video of them like there was something weird about them. That creeped me out.
I hope I don't creep anyone out.

The hubs was about the same way here - tolerated but still thought they were creepy - but I showed him some pictures of the best looking dolls I could find and let him see what I was doing with mine and just kind of leaving them out and about. He's gotten a little more comfortable with them and comments on how pretty/moody they're being now and then. The only thing he's still not cool with is when they're lying around in parts for cleaning/face-ups, especially if they don't have their eyes in.

The moment I cleaned out the office to keep all my dolls in, and they weren't sitting out in the living room, he became much more tolerable towards them. But he still calls them those effin' creepy dolls. And when I'm not around my doll friends I usually try to not talk dolls and even sometimes call them "my creepy dolls" he really seems to like that I'm not completely "And I bought my new little on a sweater" But when I'm around the doll girls, "Don't you just love this new sweater I got for Evie, she's such a clothing whore!" So for my man it's really about balance. :D
A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. BJD collecting is as customizable as the dolls themselves. Do whatever pleases you the most, because otherwise, why do it at all? All for the 'Gram Bitches love the 'Gram.

My fiance and all the roommates are pretty good with the dolls. They're cool with me calling them by name and/or often talking about what I'm doing with them. The fiance is a writer and I think he just sees them as a manifestion of a character that I get to interact with in a physical way, which they are, so even if I'm accidentally talking out loud to them, he just sees it as a thought proccess, although that would probably creep out the roommates. I think the fiance would get really really creeped out if I started calling them my kids, in a large part because none of my dolls characters are children. If we have guests coming over, I make sure all the dolls are on their shelf in the bedroom and not in the common areas. It is important for them to have their own area.

Right now, with my only one, I have to be careful about talking to her in front of my family. :P They think it's a bit weird when I talk to her, but my mom really does seem to like her.

It still makes me lol so hard that as soon as my painting teacher saw her she loved her and wanted me to make paintings of her.

I think this actually is a really good way to explain it to people who don't quite get the way we talk to them. I feel comfortable saying most of the dolls I've encountered are character dolls. A vast majority of doll people are creative sorts, and a lot of dolls I've seen are shells for RP or book/writing characters. Even dolls that become their own personality are really just manifestations of the owner's creativity. I think I'm going to remember that, next time someone gives me a weird look for personifying a chunk of plastic.

Maybe you just need a "cool" doll or the right character? Or a nearly nekked chick with squishable boobies.

My dolls never creeped anyone out as far as I know... My boyfriend creeped ME out once though by putting eyes in a head that was lying around. I picked it up and got a shock from the (totally derpy) eyes he'd put in... simply because I wasn't expecting them there :P
