I've always called it a cart. I was born in TX and have lived most of my life in Western PA. I do hear buggy quite often though, but I'm outside of Pittsburgh. I think buggy is considered part of "Pittsburghese" in this region. (I loath Pittsburghese)

I live in east TN and I call it a buggy, I haven't really heard anyone else call it a shopping cart unless it was the managers at my old work place announcing it over the PA, but even then sometimes they would call them buggies.

Where I live on Long Island we call it a cart or a basket. When I went to school in Connecticut, my CT friends called it a carriage.

I tend to refer to them as buggies. It might've been yannyan, but I believe that she gave me an odd look the first time she heard me call it that. At least I've gotten out of the habit of calling them bananas. (I used to work at office max, and their buggies are yellow...) Not sure where the 'buggy' was picked up, since I've lived in several places; Kentucky, Arizona, Florida, Wisconsin, Minnesota...

I've never heard it be called a buggy before, I live in Northern/Upstate NY, and I've always heard shopping cart. I always find this stuff interesting, it's amazing how many different words an object can be called. :)

Your first impression was right, I think, Trethowan-san!

I was born in NE NJ---it was always called 'cart' there. At age 10, we moved to NE PA, where again, it was still called a 'cart.' (Though the big sub sandwiches switched from 'Hero' to 'Hoagie')

From NE PA, when I was 16, we moved to NE Florida, and worked in SE GA, where in both places, it's known as a 'buggy.' (And now those sandwiches are 'subs' or 'po'boys.')

I think it's if you're native to the South, it's a 'buggy'; and native to the North, it's 'cart.' (Of course, there must be some exceptions according to local vernacular, but mainly....)

Like in the North, it's a 'crash' while in the South, it's a 'wreck.' (Referring to car accidents)

I think we can all agree though, that at one time it was a magical ride around the store.

and now it's a metal cage in which high/drunk teenagers race in.

While we're on the subject, do say "pop" or "soda"? "trash" or "garbage"? "bag" or "sack"?
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@
