So, MSN ran a bunch of updates last night and again this morning, and all of a sudden my Hotmail password wouldn't work. I tried changing it, but Hotmail kept saying it wouldn't accept the change. I tried another server--same thing. Finally I called tech support--at my expense, of course--and, after over an hour on the phone, they fixed it; but the tech support person told me it was only fixed temporarily, and, if I wanted it to be fixed permanently, there would be a "one-time fee" on my "free" account of $100.00.
Needless to say, I am no longer a Hotmail subscriber.
Gotta marvel at that Bill Gates--never enough.

Say what? That sounds suspicious EAB. I use hotmail too, and mine works fine.

That doesn't sound right at all, EAB. I use hotmail on my laptop and phone and both have been working fine. There hasn't been any maintenance that I know of lately, either. O.o The other thing is I've lost my password numerous times and even when I had to contact tech I was never asked to pay any kind of fee.

That sounds to me like you were not talking to Hotmail. It sounds like you got some sort of redirect problem.

I suspect they were running some sort of test on a select number of people to see if they could get away with it.
I called the Hotmail number that is posted by them three different times, and got to the same place every time. Every person I spoke to had a thick Indian accent, but my experience is that, whenever I call anyone about technical problems with anything, I get routed to India.
Besides, everything to do with changing my password, etc., came from my own Hotmail page, and initially I couldn't even get on Hotmail, because that message would pop up saying the site was unavailable. So, unless someone hijacked the entire Hotmail site, I think there was something in those updates that precipitated the whole thing.
I don't know. I'm about as tech savvy as a dead flea. I should probably run an over night scan by MacAfee, though. Wouldn't hurt.

EAB- I have Hotmail but haven't had a problem like that. The only thing I saw was a message asking for my phone number in case of some emergency. This was after I logged into my account and not in my mailbox. I just gave a false phone and it wasn't come up again.

I'm so glad I didn't have to write a thesis back when I got my master's. Being in education I got to do a project, which was creating an art unit: lesson plans, examples, resources, grading rubrics, etc. Didn't hurt that my adviser was the department head and loved me. I earned my graduate assistanceship by painting murals of fairy tales and nursery rhymes on her office walls. ^__^

Damn - my long suffering phone has just died... My main lifeline to people I know miles away has been cut off for a few days... Feel strangely vulnerable now... Even though I know logically it's not the end of the world or anything...

If it is JUST the battery that died, there are a lot of plug-in battery packs you can get that will extend the life of it until you're ready to replace. It's a bit more bulky, but it totally works.

Thanks - it was working, just not as a phone. Reception had utterly vanished - turns out the whole network was down...
But my phone is at the awful stage where it could die of it's own accord any day now. I just lack the will (and money) to change it out just yet. I need to wait until the end of the month before it becomes an affordable option
