Not at all. For the squares just pick a size, don't forget the seam allowances, cut them out, mix them up and sew them together. You can purchase specific fabrics but it's more fun if you use leftovers and recycle old clothes and have all the memories they bring. You can mix weights and textures, as long as it isn't too thin or stretchy. When you get enough squares to make a blanket you make a sandwich with the top, with the squares, some fluffy batting inside, and a backing cloth. Making a doll sized one is an easy way to try it out.
The actual quilting is the stitches that hold the layers together. That can be fancy or just strait stitching.
