For a more steam tank check out "Sakura Wars". Other places to steal futuristic or unusual tanks would be Citidel Miniatures and the Warhammer game. Me? Into Anime and Role-playing games? Nah...
Funny enough, there's a very similar tank to the Shermans used in
Kelly's Heroes that will play a part in the post WW2 history of Pinkie's home country, Aventine. Both tanks are the same hull and engine type (M4A3) but Aventine's use the larger T23 turret for 76 mm gun tanks and they also preferred the later Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS). Oddball's tank was a remanufactured M4A3 that was re-gunned with the 76 mm but retained the smaller 75 mm turret and also had the late production Vertical Volute Spring Suspension (VVSS). Yeah, can you tell I love that movie?
My initial idea was to use a fictional design and I considered vehicles from 40K, as well as Venus Wars, Dominion: Tank Police, Technopolis (or is it Techno Police?) 21, Maschinen Krieger and, well, you get the idea. I eventually decided to go with a plausible "real world" history that sees them start with an early design like the
Renault FT-17 and move through various pre- and post- WW2 western designs up until today. In post- WW2 era, I imagine that they'd be beneficiaries of the Mutual Assistance Program created by the US
Mutual Defense Assistance Act. This means you'd see the usual assortment of WW2 and early Cold War US military vehicles before things start to dry up during the '70s and '80s. As for what they've been using in recent years, my guess is either the US M60A3 or the German Leopard 1A5 (or heck, be like Italy and contract the same in-country manufacturer to build both under license). Beyond that however, I've gotten kind of stuck.
My only real criteria is that it has to be something I could easily build or convert from an existing 1/35 scale kit. Sure, I'd love to have a 1/6 scale version but even if I had the money for such a thing or the skills and tools to build it myself, storing and transporting it would also be a problem.
