LOL! Well, fortunately, my son can do woodwork, so once we actually get into the house and get some measurements, I'll be able to consult with him on how much work he wants to do. (Former owner hasn't closed on new house so he's renting from us now.) I can put up commercially made shelf kits, but he'd have to do the lumber idea.

I've used metal racks for really heavy stuff before.

I have been accumulating Ikea Kallax, or what ever the current name is for the ones that hold record albums, as I can find them and even taken apart and put back together they've held up. They're stuffed full of books and are a good height for 1/6 scale dolls.

The only other shelves in the house I'd trust are a couple of real wooden ones.

You are in Alaska.

Alaska has earthquakes.

THIS should be your first consideration when you decide what goes on or against your walls.

In either case, I suggest a retaining strap across the entire front of each shelf.

Been there and done that. I've been thru a couple of quakes that dumped things over. Currently, I have most of my dolls in plastic boxes that would cushion them in case of a fall. I'm hoping that I can get our son to cut me plexiglass doors to go over the shelves or at the least a plexi strip that would run the length of each shelf and allow me to put stuff behind it easily but still hold things in.

I know a lot of online folks talk about a couple different IKEA bookshelves, but we don't have one up here and shipping would negate any savings.

I think I have roughly 30 years on you. So I actually REMEMBER the Anchorage Earthquake of 1964. When you get another one that big, it won't be something that "dumps things over."

~lives on a fault line, breeds fragile glass unicorns, and knows better than you~ jk

What about putting felt or something similar on the bottom of the shelves? Or a rail made of decorative trim?

I have to apologize for hijacking this thread. It's just that at ages 68 (me) and 76 (the DH) and both of us on Social Security, buying a house was a really big and somewhat terrifying thing. If anyone wants to talk houses some more, please PM me or if it's okay with admins, we can make a new thread. I'm always glad for any advice and hearing about other experiences.

I tried linking one of my adopted click pets here, but the board wouldn't let me. :/

Hubby just ordered some #FailFix dolls that I left in the cart for me for my birthday next month. Now I just need to forget about it and be surprised!
