WOOHOO! Phil, our work-critter left this afternoon and the job is (almost) completely done!
We had the hideous, horrid shabby stained FILTHY *DISGUSTING* grey carpet RIPPED out by its little woof threads. Underneath the nauseating floor covering (the fault of the PREVIOUS tenants! Not US!) was a hideous vile (you get the picture) foam pad. Under the (description removed to make a long story short) was ancient, nasty, crumbling (Oh forget it... it wasn't pretty) lino. Yick! ASBESTOS lino! Icky yicky yucky ucchy FOO!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaand under the (et cetera) lino was....
A BEAUTIFUL 1940's wooden floor! The patterns of the wood back then weren't appreciated. The floor was cheapie cheapie then, and the grain was never intended to match.... BUT.... we had Phil sand it all down smooth and add sealer which darkened the wood just a >bit< and that brought up the grain! It is one of the most gorgeous floors I have EVER seen! This house is a "chimera" being part 100 year old adobe bricks, and part cinderblock! We have walls that are well *over* a foot thick! The windows and doors are not square! Ha! So when we had Phil put in two new (beautiful wood that matches the flooring!) doors, he had to custom make them! Not square!
So now instead of living in a weird nasty cobbled together heap with vile carpeting, we are living in a charming, 1940's style "adoboid" New Mexico house. Oh... did I mention the light fixtures?
What I thought were rather grimy fusty nasty old frosted glass fixture shades with no pattern or beauty (we had been planning to change them) when taken down and WASHED, turned out to be fantastic Depression-glass two toned (clear and color) patterned shades! One is hobnail Fenton style glass, the other is a pattern of petals against pinstripes. And the light through the shades is sparkling and bright instead of dingy and depressing!
NOW all I have to do is move all the boxes and bales and storage containers and thises and thatses BACK into the rooms! The total job cost under $1000 and the landowner paid for materials and we paid the labour! What a wonderful home we now live in! I'm SO happy!
