Had all four wisdom teeth pulled at the same time, got dry socket the next day AND had to go to work. Totally can empathize with your pain :( I must have major pain resistance though because I dont' recall taking any fancy pain killers or anything - just some advil until it went away.

I've really been thinking this through, I can't look at my dog. I can't interact with her. My husband has been feeding her because it makes me sick to go outside with her. She has been outside since the incident. I've contact the local ACD rescue and the shelter that I got her from asking what I should do, if they would take her, and if they would euthanize her if they did. I don't want her to be euthanized, because she is a good dog, she is just not for me anymore.

I'm sorry, but I won't take her to the vet because if she did have a tumor I would have her put down than have her go through surgery at old age. Most likely if I take her to the pound she will also be euthanized.

This whole situation is just heart wrenching and I have no idea what to do. I have no love for her anymore.
I am at the point right now where I never want to own a dog again after knowing what she did to my poor cat. I hope with all of my heart, Alice died quickly and all the damage that was done to her was after her death so that she could not feel any of it.

It is likely that she did die very quickly- otherwise she would have done a lot of damage to your dog. I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I love my dogs, but I'm really a cat person. I have five cats- one sitting on my legs right now, and I would react the same way you are feeling. If she had a tumor, the vet would probably put her down too if she is old. I suppose it's possible the shelter could find her a new home without cats, but right now all the shelters are over-full and having to turn away animals. But definitely worth a call to the shelter to ask what you should do. And you could always just call the vet and talk to him on the phone.
As far as loving your dog- remember that she is not human, and did not "chose" this behavior. It is instinct (or possibly health-related) and she probably had no control over it. When my dog Max went insane and tried to kill our other dog- after it was over he was shaking and very upset- he couldn't comprehend what had just happened, but knew it was something awful.
If the vet/shelter recommends that she be put down, at least it will be done humanely and hopefully your husband can be with her when it happens.
Really- so horribly sorry you have to go through this.
*hugs*

I know it was instinct, dogs are carnivores.. their ancestors ate meat and hunted. But I can't forgive her for it. I also can't take the chance on it happening again.

She will be finding a new home, or being returned to the shelter or taken to the rescue. I'll figure out what to do when I get a response from them.

If it were my dog that I have loved for so long I would somehow feel betrayed even tho thats nonsense from the dog point of view. And I would want to know the why, thus take her to the vet to see if it was health related.
And its not a cat thing if it is. It might not even have to do anything with the cat that got killed if its a health problem. And because there wasn't any problem before I really think it could be a health problem. If the shelter doesn't pick up on that the next home might be in for the same thing or worse.

Kittysaurus, I totally understand your objections to the potential of having your dog euthanized, but please hear me. This is what happened with our dog Cody. We didn't want to have him put down. None of the rescues would take him because he was aggressive - including the one we got him from (even though our paperwork indicated they would take him back - they said they didn't take dogs back to be euthanized and couldn't afford to have him trained).

So we did nothing. After a few weeks I was okay with the dog again. Eventually we got back into our normal routine. Of course, he hadn't killed another pet, so it was easier for me than for you. We took Cody to be boarded at the vets and while getting the nasal spray for kennel cough, he bit the tech. Even she claimed it was her fault though. So we still did nothing.

Then out of the blue (a few months later) - for no reason whatsoever, Cody bit my daughter in the nose. The NOSE. It could have as easily been her lips, her eyes - her throat. I'm not being overly dramatic here. It was a terrifying incident that caused permanent damage to my daughter's face. But it could have been much worse.

Let me take it one step further. We were questioned by the hospital staff - as if they were trying to determine if they needed to call the police for a potential child endangerment issue!! And my daughter was 14 at the time, not a toddler.

This happened on a Thursday and our vet was kind enough to take Cody in for boarding over the weekend while I tried desperately to find a solution that didn't include euthanization. No one would help, as I noted above. The rescues even made it sound as though WE had done wrong by Cody, that he would be fine with proper (expensive) training and that any other option was not acceptable. We were made out to be the bad guys.

We couldn't afford aggression training. We couldn't even afford to have a necropsy. Thank goodness our vet's staff were so very understanding. The tech told my husband (he was there for the shot) that Cody appeared to be in a lot of pain, they just didn't know if it was physical or emotional.

Please ... don't let it get as far as it did with us. A toddler can't withstand as much as a teenager. My daughter has had to deal with a fear of dogs that she didn't have before. The fact is we got a puppy a few months later and she has just recently (3 years after) gotten to where she will play and get snuggly with Tucker. And she will always have the scars on her nose.

This weekend, sit down and have a heart to heart talk with your husband. You know your family's safety is most important. At the very least, you really should have your dog checked out by the vet and have a serious discussion with the vet about what happened and what your options are. You need to talk to someone who has experience in dealing with aggressive dogs. Don't deny yourselves that benefit.

I hope you will be able to get a shelter or rescue to take your pup. Sorry for the long post, but I want you to know you aren't alone in this.

-.- Just came back from my cousin's husband's funeral. He died of cancer at age 45, the third death in the family this year, plus one from my "work" who was my dad's age. I've just about had it with this year.
There's a cat in "complicated" =^.^=

My dog hasn't been inside since, so I'm not going to worry about her bothering my son. I got bit by my mother's dog when I was about 4, it wasn't his fault at all. I was rough housing with him and he bit me too hard. I still have the scar, it's next to my eye where my tearduct is. He never growled, or bit, or showed any aggressive behavior before or after that. Sometimes it is peoples fault, sometimes its the dogs. Sometimes it really is just an accident.

I'm so sorry that you and your daughter had to go through all of that. : (

I heard back from the shelter, they want me to call them on monday so we 'can look at all our options'. This gives me hope that they won't euthanize her.

@Jany: I'm so sorry, this year doesn't seem to be good for anyone.

Really minor suck compared to everything that's been going on recently...

Uni/Work related. My dissertation supervisor is kind of insisting on a finalised literature review of just about everything related to my actual project - which would be fine, I'll need it eventually (in March...) but he wants it before I start on any lab. training or anything else to do with the project at all... So by the time this gets done I'll be at least a month behind everyone else work wise... (Argh! Why did I pick the Prof. who's so insistent on doing things HIS way??)

Oh hi, depression, good to see you again. No, go right ahead and make yourself at home, I love it when you come to visit.

But yeah, I promised to have all of grandma's recipes scanned and organized by the memorial (which is next week. I still have another half box to go before I can even start organizing. Yeah...) and two tests for math due Tuesday, AND a research proposal due Monday which is fun because the school isn't even open to DO any research for said proposal.
