HI Evelien- you should NOT be offended, AT ALL, because my point was there are so many lawyers in the US that they sit around pursuing frivolous lawsuits that should never, ever make it to court. There is simply no such thing as personal accountability anymore. You can get sued for ANYTHING in the United States, and even if it is completely frivolous and ridiculous, and the person suing loses, it can still cost you a ton of money, your job, even your home as you try to fight it.

So anyway- I think you misread or at least misunderstood my post. There have been whole shows on tv and radio written around ridiculous lawsuits in the United States. One that comes to mind- when you buy a Husqvarna Chain Saw in the US, there is a disclaimer on it saying, "Do not attempt to stop chainsaw with your hand." Okay. DUH??? But apparently someone DID, and someone SUED, and now to cover their asses, chain saws sold in the US have this disclaimer on them.
So the radio host was asking a man from Sweden if the chain saws there had the same disclaimer, and his response was, "Are you joking? If anyone in Sweden was stupid enough to try to stop a chainsaw with his hand, he would be so embarrassed at having done something so idiotic that the last thing he would want is to let people know that he had done it. So of course he would not sue the company!"

Frivolous lawsuits have nothing to do with protecting kids- PARENTS are supposed to protect kids. So- for instance, I would let my kids have one of those wonder eggs with the toys inside- but not when they were two years old and might choke on it. I wouldn't give it to my kid and not tell them to eat it carefully, etc. And like I said later on (and I was being ironic and sarcastic) I don't know how I survived my childhood, climbing trees, jumping off of buildings, going down metal slides (try to find a metal slide in the US- they are all plastic now), and so forth. I fell out of a tree at the park and broke my arm, and my parents did not sue the city for "letting" me climb the tree. I got a cast on my arm, and I continued climbing trees with the cast on (don't tell my parents).

In my opinion. the "over saftifization" (made that word up) is resulting in a generation of children who are going to have no agility or strength and no sense. There is a park down the street from me, and when my kids were little they had some very high metal slides, a metal jungle gym, an incredible redwood structure of forts and catwalks, a big rope web, and an old-fashioned merry-go-round (the kind my parents used to refer to as "ankle busters"). My kids played on that stuff all the time and yes, maybe they fell off and got a scraped knee, chipped a tooth, etc. but they lived to tell about it and were more careful the next time.

My children are grown now- and the last time my younger daughter (24 years old) was home, we went up to the park to feed the ducks. All the old structures are gone, and in their place are those big plastic climbing structures, none of them more than four feet off the ground, with padded rubber mats underneath. My daughter was sad, and pissed off about it.

As far as being progressive- Holland has a very big reputation for that, and everyone I know thinks it is great and wishes it were more like that here.

So do NOT be offended because it certainly was not meant in the way you interpreted it!

Exactly.
I mean, seriously. I stuck a bean up my nose when I was a little kid, just because I was curious. It did eventually come out but not without a LOT of blowing! But my parents did not sue the company that packaged the beans because their kid did a stupid thing. I can see it now. "BEANS- for consumption only, do not shove up your nose".

I think my English is pretty okay... it's just certain expressions that confuse me, cirquemom phrased it quite literally. I'm still thankful for you people telling me what 'elbow grease' was after I'd been looking for it on eBay because someone said I needed it to do something LMAO!!

This is why things on the internet get dicey. Written things sometimes get misinterpreted. If you had heard me say it in person, there would have been absolutely no doubt as to what I meant, because you would have heard my sarcastic tone of voice, and also you would have seen me roll my eyes. I was actually poking fun at America, NOT insulting Holland. My form of humor in real life is very self-deprecating. And actually, sometimes people in real life DO misinterpret things I say, if they don't know me.

For instance, I was at a football party last Sunday (not yesterday), and we were sitting around talking about aches and pains and taking anti-inflammatories and I mentioned that taking fish oil is supposed to be good for inflammation, and thus maybe would prevent alzheimer's. And then someone mentioned fish being considered "brain food", and I said, "Well, it must be, because I eat fish all the time and look how smart I am!"

Now, my friends knew that I was just joking, but one woman who was new and doesn't know me well gave me this look like..."My, you are arrogant!!!"

So- yes, it happens in real life too!

Wonderballs!! I remember those things, they were totally awesome. When I was little I used to get one every now and then as a treat. I loved the little Disney toys inside. I used to crack them into pieces to get to the toy first. It sucks now that all that's inside is candy, and it's not even that good of candy, though I think the chocolate is still pretty good.

LOL...I have the same type of humor. Alot of people think I'm actually serious when I poke fun at myself. Way back in the day, I worked for a gas station as a cashier. We had a new candy bar in the store. I must explain that I am a BBW, Big Beautiful Woman, and that I have a very healthy self esteem about my weight. (It helps to have a husband that LOVES big girls.) Anyway, a customer came up to me holding the new candy and asked if I had ever tried it. I explained, "No, I can't have sugar." She asked, "Why diabetic?" I exclaimed, "No...just fat." The woman didn't know whether to laugh or be shocked. She just stared at me dumb founded. It was hilarious!!

I've come across this twice now: a person modifies (alters the original shape/structure) a doll and then calls it a "restoration".

A restoration is when you restore a doll to it's original state, the shape it was cast in; not a shape you think is better, but the way it came out of the mold. (minus seamlines)

If you repaired a previous modification, that is a restoration. If you repaired a previous modification and added some changes yourself then the doll has been restored AND modified. Even if your modifications are seamless and do improve the look of the doll but still changed it from it's original state it is not a restoration - it is a modification.

I wonder if they think adding the term "modified" reduces the doll's value?
Some people assume any change to the doll's original state reduces it's value but really it depends on the company and mold. An altered Unoa is still worth more than an altered Volks MSD for example. Weird huh?

By the way- my grandmother's maiden name was Eck, she was Russian Mennonite and supposedly that family originally was from Holland (we are talking 400 years ago- Holland to Germany to Russia to USA). And my dad's family was Russian Lutheran, and supposedly that family originated in Holland too (400 years ago). So it's likely that I have Dutch blood in my veins.
