OT: Nostalgia trip

Last night I sat down and watched Disc 1 of Season 1 of the original classic Star Trek.

I grew up on this series and spent my childhood having alternating crushes on Kirk and Chekov depending on the episode. I thought I knew them all by heart, but I was so wrong. So many things I had forgotten (Sulu's garden in "The Man Trap", Spock actually smiling during "Charlie X") came back to me - it was just awesome. It really is like seeing it for the first time, rewatching it after all these years. And of course I rented remastered versions where the film has been cleaned up, enhanced, and even some of the special effects touched up. I was a bit iffy on that last part, but it's so subtly done that I don't find it detracts from re-exploring an old friend. :D

Why am I gushing about it here? I dunno, I just wanted to gush and I figure there are enough Trekkies around who will understand and appreciate my pleasure :)

Love the old Star Trek, I grew up watching it too. Though it was because my Dad's a fan, and I used to watch it with him. So I guess I'm a second generation Trekkie? :D He just bought the first three seasons on Blu-ray, so we'll probably watch it again sometime soon. I loved the "Trouble with Tribbles Episode", and the one where Kirk and Spock were supposed to fight to the death, on Planet Vulcan. I can remember pretty much the entire episode, yet the name of it escapes me. XD Another awesome show from that we used to watch was "The Six Million Dollar Man". We are waiting for it to come out on DVD (finally!!), this November. :)

LOL - that would be "Amok Time" when Spock's hormones cause him to go berserk on Kirk's ass because his (Spock's) "fiance" chooses Kirk to be her champion in the fight :) Oh yea, that's one of the big classic episodes! In my case, if it had Chekov in it, it was probably one of my favorites hahahahahaha

I watched the original Star Trekon the Satellite, and know most things about it, but I was fairly young, so I grew up mostly on ST:TNG...... my fav two were like, Riker and Wesley Crusher >.> *Derp* (and then my old negligent upper management dude whom I've grown to hate had Riker's beard-stache and I disliked both ever since.... even if Riker's actor was uh.....whats his face in Gargoyles.... and the lady for Deanna Troy was Demona, from Gargoyles.... and the dude for Data was Puck, in Gargs... roflmao...)
Somehow I never got into DS9, though I did watch it.... but in the end, my ultimate fav was Voyager o_O FINALLY a freaking female captain.

My fav ST movie, though, was uh.............. I forgot the number honestly, but it was the one with the whale, and they had to go back in time, to the 80's, to get one xD

I still have Scotty's, "hello computer" ingrained in my skull...

You know what's funny? I watch old episodes of the original series and still really enjoy them, even if they can occasionally be really goofy. I've seen a couple episodes of the "restored and enhanced" version and I really liked it

On the other hand, I can barely watch TNG or its spin-offs anymore and "Enterprise" was just awful. In fact, I was a pretty big fan of the TNG era shows but by the time Generations came out, I felt the whole franchise took a big nose dive from which it never really recovered. They lost me as a fan and I've never really come back, not even for the recent "reboot" movie.

Honestly, that has pretty much expanded into any sci-fi fandom or franchise. I'm just not that in to it anymore. And yet, I still really enjoy the original Trek.

hahaha, on the other hand I just could NEVER get into any of the "modern" trek series. I tried, I really did, but the plot inconsistancies and cheesiness that I could forgive in the original Trek (since it was, after all, a product of it's era) I just could not in the modern stuff. And somehow those characters just never felt comfy to me. Slipping into those classic trek episodes was like putting on an old comfy pair of shoes you've forgotten you have - they just feel so right!

I think you hit on something there with the characters. There was always something just a bit distant or stilted about the TNG-era characters and shows to me. While the technical and production aspects were much better, the characters seemed less "vivid" to me.

I do have to give credit to Brent Spiner and Michael Dorn for really standing out as actors and creating very good, likable characters. And I will admit that, especially with TNG, there were some very good individual episodes. Over all though, I don't feel any of those later series have aged very well.

This may also be a matter of perspective. I don't mean to sound like I'm belittling the fond memories of folks younger than me who recall watching TNG and its spin-offs when they were kids. Bernita and I were both young adults when TNG first started, so we're obviously going to have a different "take" than say, someone like Tracy, who literally grew up with TNG.

I've noticed a similar thing with Star Wars fandom, too. I'm old enough to remember going to see the first movie when it opened. I was duly impressed and later saw "Empire" and "Jedi" when they came out. As a kid, I had plenty of the toys and even built a few of the model kits. I watched all the movies numerous time when I was younger and I will even still occasionally watch them today. But I was never quite the BIG DAMN FAN that a lot of my friends just a bit younger than me are. I'm not sure why that is but even an age difference of five to ten years seems to color significant differences in our feelings and perceptions about the series.

I watched the original Star Trek with my dad as well. My favorite was Spock. Then, I watched TNG with my son. He could hum the theme song when he was in kindergarten. I am a Jean-Luc girl. He is the reason I drank Earl Grey tea when I had tea at the Savoy in London. Deep Space 9 lost me when Jadzia died. I didn't get into Voyager or Enterprise.

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed the reboot movie. If I hadn't been a Spock fan before, I would be one now. Seeing Nimoy with the new Spock in the movie made me squeal like a schoolgirl. (My husband looked at me very strangely-at least we were at home.)

See, I come at Trek from an entirely different angle.

TNG was on, but my parents never watched it. By high school it was in reruns on Fox, which came in as a cloud of static at our house. We could watch cartoons (like X-Men) but Trek was impossible to watch - anything dark basically had no picture (like Klingon ships).

But DS9 was syndicated, and on a channel that came in clear. I started somewhere in the third or fourth season, and am firmly in the "DS9 was the best Trek" camp.I loved the characters, and that they grew and changed and had solid relationships with each other (which also grew and changed).

By the time I could watch TNG, I found I didn't like it. Someone hit a reset button after every episode. And I found the characters stilted and forced.

But I think a lot of it has to do with which Trek you saw first. People imprint on Trek.

I grew up on Trek, my mom was a big fan of the original, and I still remember when the premier of TNG came on. Before that, it was a 2 hour episode or movie of I think the ORIGINAL original Trek, the one before Kirk? It involved green women and aliens with giant brains trapping the crew in these caves?
