Some stupid 14 year old infected my computer with a virus! I almost lost my prize collection of dollie photos and music and what not but I managed to save every thing except my three months worth of anime siiiigh so sad.... post if you've ever had to start all over again...

This has happened 3 times for me....Once from my mothers friends- Once from my mother, and once from my Bf's Pr0n. =S
I like to draw alooot, and always lost all my pictures! D= and thousands and thousands of songs, not to mention my Sims Data! totally not cool!

I could go on for hours how it all leads back to being a certian someone's fault...But I won't.

Last computer was shot after someone clicked something stupid and didn't think to have everything including my stories backed up on a disk. I lost 66 story files all of our pictures and some video.

Thank god we had a lot of them printed.

There are reasons I dont' let anyone touch my computers except me. Plus I have backup drives - utterly invaluable!

I had to reinstall windows on my laptop once because it lost sound but before that I took what I felt was important off it first. I got the sound back yet downside was it can no longer go on the internet without freezing and just recently there's now a short in the charging cord. It's like 6 years old so I forgive it.

Thankfully my family is internet safe and doesn't give their credit card numbers to animated moose. :D

@Alopecia No Hime i've also felt your pain I lost all my original fan fictions in the crash on my old comp.

I think the sting for me was more of the fact we lost all of our pictures including pictures I had no other copies saved from DeviantART. T-T;

And the external hard drive or on line storage was created. No one else uses my electronic devices period. Yes, I had a Windows hard drive crash for Xmas one year but because I live in fire and earthquake country etc and kept regular back up DVDs, this was before affordable thumb and pocket drives. I recovered all but a few MP3s that didn't transfer.

Now I have a Mac, I also have a portable hard drive which I regularly update with everything and a thumb drive which gets updated with important/commonly used files. I also have a Classic iPod stuffed to the gills with music, movies, and audio books.

Oh, yes, my last desktop and laptop both died, either of age or some virus (I download a lot of anime and Asian drama, so probably something infected there). Of course, the laptop never worked right to begin with - had to send it TWICE to have the harddrive replaced due to errors and crashing. XP

Luckily, I have a wonderful little 320GB portable harddrive I've got EVERYTHING backed up on - stories, pictures, the entire expanse of my iTunes library, ect - and I'm anal about constantly running virus scans and stuff on it to make sure IT doesn't get infected with anything, too. I probably should unplug it from the computer when I'm not using it, but then I do and go and try to find something off it, and have to plug it in again anyway. lol

I did lose a bunch of pictures of my vacation to New York city, and a couple of old stories when my desktop crashed. The pictures couldn't be saved, but luckily the stories are posted on various sites on the net, so they could be salvaged, at least.

Maintenance is also important. You have to be sure to consistently defrag, virus and spyware scan, and just in general keep it all up to date. I've repaired towers for people where they'd never defragged EVER or hadn't run a virus scan (with their out-of-date scanner) for months.
