Obitsu Photo Request

Postby AlmySidaKay » Mon Jun 06, 2011 3:54 pm

Would someone be willing to give me a shot of an Obitsu 60cm Gretel head from the back and open so I can see the eye set up and how that head cap is attached? Only photos I can find are post face up or from the front.

I don't have mine yet but I do know that there are two types, one with eye pockets and one without.

Mine is the kind with out the eye pockets. I think it's the "new" one? Not sure. I only got her a few months ago from JS.

See the inside of Cerise's head....no brain whatsoever...Not surprising huh..OW...dang it! .....now I'll have to go get a rabies shot!

Not sure about the eye pocket but here is the head cap.

Image

It is head on via tension but it's super hard to get off so some ppl mod it to have magnets instead. They cut off that rim that holds it on and use epoxy clay to form tabs for the magnets. I believe Kiki has done a tutorial on this before on youtube.

Here's the link.

For myself I'm lazy so far so I've just cut those little triangles in the cuff area to help with getting the headcap off
However, I am going to magnetize it since it's still a pain to change eyes and such.

Gretel head (newer version), interior, with eyepockets.

Gretel head (old version), interior close up, without eye pockets. (note: debris inside is residual eye putty after eye removal, not the mold.)

Gretel head, head cap partially removed.

Like most Obitsu large scale heads, the head cap is kept on by the rim of the head (the hole where the cap goes) fitting around a wider "lip" in the cap and into a groove. Removing and replacing the head cap involves some squeezing at the sides (above the ears) and prying the cap off or shoving it back in. Neither being very graceful, but effective and cheap. Kiki-chan has fitted a few Gretels with magnets for ease of entry. I haven't because I don't go in there much and when I do, being a big burly guy, I just manhandle them right off. Grrrrr!

As far as which is better, with or without eyepockets, it's really personal preference. The eye pockets can eliminate eye putty, hot glue, etc., and "fit" most 16mm eyes, but as all 16mm eyes aren't the same size, some fit better than others. For those difficult fits, a little snip or two with the scissors makes insertion easier. With some of the smaller 16mm eyes you may still need a little eye putty to keep them from rolling around.

The heads without eye pockets allow you to use larger eyes. In one of my Gretels I've got 19mm eyes. With a little beveling on the interior, they look great.

Perfect, thanks so much for all the info! I've been thinking about getting a Gretel head for Amelia since so far I've been very unimpressed with the face ups for the other YuHao dolls that people have taken photos of, plus, on the non face'd up head, her ears weren't even the same resin color. >.>

This is helpful for me too. The Gretel I'm getting comes with two heads, one with and one without eye pockets. I might get some bigger eyes, those 19mm look great!

@ K2 - Shopping for eyes at the moment, but I can only find 18mm and 20mm, where did you find those 19mm eyes..? I can't make up my mind, 18 or 20? Think I'll just get both and try what looks best haha..

They were listed as 18mm but they actually measure out to 19mm. That's kind of what I meant when I said all 16mm eyes aren't the same size. These were from a Yahoo Japan auction so I have no idea where they originally came from.
