To buy rooted or not to buy rooted

That is the question.

I have two characters that I'm going to make in to 11cm Obitsu's but one has a mohawk, and the other has long parts and shaved parts. I'll post pics.

So should I get the heads with the hair in 'em already or do I get bald heads? Anyone every "shave" their rooted heads? How does it look?

it's going to look silly if you cut a rooted head close to the scalp. And the hairs will fall out easily. If you've seen a barbie with a close shave, that's what it will look like. You can see all the plugs.
You could get some flocking, and flock the short part and root the rest. ;D

For the kind of hairstyle you're looking for, you're better off buying the head bald and rooting in the mohawk. Just a word of warning, the vinyl heads tend to have this ring of vinyl around where the hairline would be from the manufacturing process. So that'll be visible with the style you're after.

Ditto the bald head and flocking. The plugs are really ugly. Even if you pull the plugs out you will have holes all over the head where the plugs were. As for the molded rings, certain companies have rings that follow the hairline. The rings are definitely not as distracting as plugs.

Definitely start with a bald head. No way could you get a rooted head to look right for that style.

It's easy to find really fine flocking too. Places that sell kits for model cars. You can get it in all kinds of colors not found in nature. They use it to make interior "carpet" and occasionally flock seats as well.

I'm going to have to look this up on google... Because I really have no idea what it is! lol

Edit:

I just looked it up. That would be perfect for the shaved look!

Oh wow! Thanks embyquinn! I watched a video of a guy working with wood, but it makes more sense seeing it on an actual doll.
