Bad pics, I know but I was just not up to hauling out the light box today and besides which I now have to wash the curtains on it because this sassy little she feline we have around here decided to use my light box for a cat hammock sans permission while I was out the other day! Black fur, not so very easy to remove in Photoshop, sigh...

I just wanted to show you all what I've been working on the last week or so. I'm not a pro at rooting, far from it. But I am getting a bit better I think. The first few I did I wouldn't even show you, lol.

Barbie Basics Steffie 1.0-2

I have two of these lovelies. I just loved this doll and had I not stumbled across another one for $5 on clearance at TJ Maxx I'd have never touched a hair on her pretty head. But I do have two and since no 2 dolls in my collection can look exactly alike I decided to have some fun with #2.

FYI she was a BITCH to get right. The cut went okay but not so much the streaks. I really hate using glue on Barbie hairbut this style simply could not be done without it. No amount of gel would make those streaks stay put. I ended up using some clear gel craft glue. I've never liked it when they do it but now finally understand why the people at Mattel tend to glop some on when making up certain styles. Her hair has punk streaks of pink, green and purple. Purple is kind of hard to see, but it's in there...

This is Basics Steffie 1.0 for comparison here. No alternations here I think she's totally perfect this doll though I really like the 1.5 Steffie and the Target Steffie too.

Fashion Fever Drew

This is one of my favorite dolls ever. Her hair is a bit coarse for a Barbie. This is an ethnic bulk hair pack, an early synthetic one. It's made for bulky braids and is not one of the new silky types but still all those colors in the red I can't help but just love. I like a little texture in my doll hair sometimes and besides which many people with red hair don't have perfectly straight smooth hair so I think it works okay. This was my first attempt at an asymmetrical hairline besides. It was not near as easy to do as I thought it would be. I removed her face spots digitally. Drew has two on her forehead that I've never been able to remove. Thought about giving her bangs but the location of the spots I'd have had to cover her eyebrows to do it and I just like that face too much to do that. She's got a crown of little braids gathered into one. Sort of a salute to her original hair which had a couple of side braids.

Basics 1.0 Kayla-2

Again I have two of these. This is the one with the normal paint job that most of these seemed to have. I'm keeping the variant I found as she is for now. Rooted her partially asymmetrically with deep blue hair, put her hair back up in a poof bun with a little pony tail as a tip of the hat to her original style. I was originally going to do this doll in red streaks but then I got the FA Stardoll so I decided to try blue instead. I like how she came out a lot actually. She always looks like quite a bitch to me. This softens her look a fair bit and makes her far more approachable.

Mystical Mermaid Kayla

This girl is rather hard to come by and she's one of my favorite Kayla dolls. When I first got her she reminded me a bit of Secret Spells Kayla who I also have and love. I've been thinking of adding some low lights to her hair for a long time to give it some depth and I really like how it came out. I think it worked well. It makes her look more red headed than orange which is nice. FYI, she's in the WQ Liv outfit. Looks good on her I think.

I love your root jobs! My favourite is your Fashion Fever Drew. I love her face and the way you pulled her hair back!

Thanks. These girls were a quite lot of work. Poor Drew she waited practically forever for her hair to get done but I think it looks pretty good. Besides the old style Barbie I'm doing in neons I'm also currently working on 3 guys at the moment turning them all into redheads. I've always wanted a RH Ken and I couldn't make up my mind which shade so I decided to create 3 brothers. The only beauty supply stores here are in really bad areas of town so I don't get down there much.

I went on vacation last year though, big city, and I hit the major beauty supply store there hard. Most people go away on vacation they buy t-shirts, magnets and such? I go away I buy bulk hair and art supplies. I bought new watercolor pencils and like 14 packs of bulk hair, including about 6 shades of red. Also, blue purple, pink, green, every neon they had pretty much. Plus someone gave me a bunch of porcelain dolls that actually had synthetic hair, no mohair, and I've been using their hair a lot for projects as I have plenty of mohair wigs to replace the synthetic on them if I want.

I have just tons of material a friend of my aunt gave me when she cleaned out her sewing room. A couple of bins of art and craft supplies and a great sewing machine. I'm having a good time. I'm actually about to buy my first casting kit too. I really want to try doing some shoe bottoms. I've been dying to try to make my own doll shoes...

These are all lovely! I always enjoy seeing re-roots, it's fun to see the variations, and I also admire all of the hard work re-rooters put into their customizations.
