To Vinyl or Not to Vinyl

:) I've got figures made from most plastics... Some examples being; Obitsus (ABS+ plasticised PVC/vinyl + nylon), Figmas (PVC + some ABS), Hot Toys (no idea, probably ABS + PVC at a minimum; a wide mix of materials there though) BJDs (Polyurethane/Resin) - all are lovely and well they have their pros and cons really. The soft vinyl figures can stain, the PVC figures dent fairly easily and the resins are quite heavy and can be shocking at posing.

But yeah, I think it all comes down to personal taste really. Really glad you found a vinyl girl you like!

As for the resin not being plastic thing? Nah.. POLYurethane, clue is in the name there, a polymer is a material consiting of a macromolecule with repeating smaller units.

There are multiple derivatives and a huge number of monomer types may be used but in the materials sense; resin is plastic. Just highly crosslinked with the number of molecules present tending towards one. (Pretty cool really) Rather than the spaghetti structure most people are taught about at school it can have hard and soft segments in the backbone structure which affect the final properties hugely. Great versatile material, it's used for all sorts of things nowadays (including a medical grade PU being used for replacement spinal discs) but it's not the magic fairydust stuff that most people in the BJD hobby seem to believe!

Some random plastics, since I'm not sure why people are talking about plastic as though it's a single material: ABS (a toughened derivative of Polystyrene, often used in electronic items, as well as the hard parts of childrens toys), Nylon (Polyamide), Kevlar (Para-aramid), Bakelite, Polyethylene, PVC (commonly known as vinyl, can be plasticised to make a softer material), Polyurethane (huge range of uses, BJDs, Pleather, Medical, skateboard wheels) and so on...

Yeah the number of myths about resin are scary... I sometimes wonder how many people who claim the tan doesn't go all the way through their dolls of late actually realised that the manufacturing method has changed for the majority of companies, and that the white marks are fairly typical of a break in plastic and are usually due to crystal formation or crazing. Anyhow unintelligable Materials Science rant over
