I saw this on DoA, too, but I was afraid to ask my question over there ^.^'

Is there a reason someone couldn't take the non-Disney versions of those sculpts and dress them up like the characters? I don't know anything about Volks dolls, but I was wondering about it.

There's no reason why anyone could not make special costumes and mod a doll into a Disney character. However those one of a kind dolls are licensed by Disney. Selling your own version and using the Disney character names would be a copyright violation and Disney is pretty aggressive when it comes to protecting their intellectual property. The Volks company is the originator of the modern resin ball joint doll. They have attained a nearly mythic status among some BJD collectors and people are willing to pay big money for the Volks nameplate. Mix all those things together and you can get 2 million yen auction prices.

I don't mean to sell, I just wondered why people were paying the 2 mil if it would be possible to get the head from Volks and make your own. Then again, maybe I'm too "DIY"; I think that about most things I see XD

You have two groups with very fanatical fans: Disney and Volks. The people that are fans of both probably went crazy when they saw them. At the current exchange rate it's only a bit over $20,000. Still, quite a lot for a single doll. But if ya gotta have it and ya got the money...

*Coughs up a hairball* OH MY....$20,000 for a doll? And here I was all "*Scoff* $1,000 for Fairyland Sebastian (even if he is gorgeous beyond belief), uh, no." (That's turned into a yes, but that's one of those "You'll never find it neener neener" deals.)

....Think of all the figmas, the Medicoms, the Obitsus...heck, like another user said, THE CARS you could buy!! I also immediately called this when I read "gijinka Jack Skellington" that Rapunzel was going to go for a couple thousand at best and Jack Skellington is probably owned by someone who is either super rich and bored or doing unspeakable things to him late at night. XDDD

It will be awesome if it was a fund raiser for a good cause. Not just a company making more money. :(
