Zeenie Dollz - "environmentally friendly" dolls

General discussions about dolls, new releases, doll reviews...you know, stuff that doesn't really fit in all the other categories but is strictly about dolls.

Zeenie Dollz - "environmentally friendly" dolls

Postby TsukiNoKemuri » Wed Apr 30, 2014 12:52 pm

I was flipping through newspapers at work and saw a small ad (I don't remember which paper) for something called Zeenie Dollz. The character illustrations kind of caught my eye, and I noticed the ad claimed they were made of recyclable materials. I scribbled down the URL, http://www.zeeniedollz.com/, to take a closer look when I got home.

It seems to be a somewhat small operation that's not directly tied to a larger manufacturer, but their dolls are listed on Amazon and Walmart.com, so it's probably not just a local operation. There are six different 12-inch dolls, all female, with articulation at elbows, wrists and knees (and probably more places; that's just what I could see). The dolls represent characters with an "eco warriors" theme. The site also depicts bad guys, but there apparently aren't dolls (yet?) for those characters.

The site doesn't really talk about what kind of plastic the dolls are made from or how one would go about recycling them; it just mentions they're non-toxic and "made from recyclable materials". They seem steeply priced for playline dolls; list price is $50, with prices around $40 on Amazon. Very few reviews on Amazon; most seem to be from a single person; one mentions a hand breaking off the first day. They seem to potentially have separate eye parts rather than decals, though they're probably not intended for customization that way. The heads are big, and I can't really judge whether the characters are meant to be adults or teens.

Has anyone seen these in the wild, or even heard of them? The price point and the head design keep me from being interested in them beyond curiosity, but it seems like a few things here are different than the usual playline doll.

Ah, that review actually has better information than the official site.

I see the reviewer had the same "how would you recycle these dolls?" question I did, and also points out they're made in China -- many, many dolls are, of course, but I can appreciate the environmental concern here. I'm a bit put off by the quality of the plastic in Yana's face as seen in the close-ups. And Evee's eye shadow is rather unbalanced.

Thanks for sharing that review; again, I learned much more from that review than from the official site.

Pretty much the way you could recycle any doll or toy, donate it to the Goodwill or Salvation Army.

I've seen these dolls on facebook and was thinking about getting one. After that review I'd rather not. The doll quality is horrible.
