Rules, I can have Doctor Who figures but only the Doctors and only the 5" scale because I already have Star Trek figures that size. If I wanted a whole army I would have had to forgo something else completely like the Monsters.

If all else fails tell yourself you will not become that woman on the hoarding TV show with 1000 dolls.

I also got in to the idea of multiple heads sharing a few bodies. It works for mid to lower level characters you don't really use that much.

Bwahaha. There's also the thing about how they would attempt to bring in the next character that's relevant to them. However you may not need the entire series to be shelled. Mine are a mix of OCs and media characters.

Hehe, its tough to admit, but the main reason is the money. Sometimes I just cannot afford it.

I've decided to limit myself to two dolls, If I want a new doll have have to giveaway or sell one of the ones I have. It means I'll likely never get certain dolls I like but it does mean I can spoil the ones I do have. I've got a blythe being customised and I've ordered a Pullip so they'll even be able to share clothes, shoes props and furniture.

I tried the 2 limit, a boy and girl of this, a boy and girl of that. If a third doll comes don't be hard on yourself, doll rules are always flexible. If you close the door of creativity leave a window open for it.

I can't think of those I'd miss or never have if I had stuck to some of my early rules, especially all customs must fit in to the story and world I created for the core batch. No Xavier no photo contest with my sister no twins. No Rian to take to Puppet Up and have one of my best nights ever. No PTEs no duplicate of the sculpt I turned in to Stephan. No Doctors. No House which led to making all sorts of heads which spurred doll making. No Roger the Centaur of Attention who the dog tried to trade one of her toys for...

Tried the two as a couple thing as well. He brought her in, she brought a friend in, friend brought relatives in. relatives made 1/6 population explode to twenty even though i culled two

Two might be tough, Four might be easier, if you consider the alpha couple route with a beta pair who would be friends, sibling or total strangers living here with alpha couple. At least I hope to go with four where my 1/3 are concern. (Alpha couple + Beta couple who are teammates to Alpha. All sort of upsized version of my 1/6ers)

i tried to do that only once, with my 2004 AZONE Maya Chinese Fantasy i got in 2010,
but seeing as she was the only example i could find for sale on the net,
it did not take me long to say Screw it All and commit $130.00 shipped for her.

she was well worth it, i think...

For me, it's money usually. I have so many dolls that I haven't counted them all! I declare that it is my main hobby and I can have them. And I love the design and creativity of various doll. I love them all. If I really want one, I will find a way to get it. If I really need to talk myself out of a doll, I will play with the ones I already have. THe problem is that Kiki-chan78 is a doll company and I like her dolls. I love Obitsu Haruka's, and Obitsu and vinyl, and I am getting really fond of Hujoo and there are other doll companies that I really love. Then they go and offer new dolls. oops. Oh look, another doll lives at my house...

When I first got into the hobby I was going to stick to 4 dolls. Then I gradually (OK, quite quickly) built up to wanting ALL the dolls. Then I decided I'd only go for dolls I had character ideas for - and with the exception of one, that worked really badly. Then I decided the purchases that had worked best were where I liked the doll regardless of whether I had a character in mind, which ended up with some mispurchases - I still liked the doll, but it didn't fit in. Now I have a few loose groupings, and if a doll I like doesn't fit in one of those (or can't be shoe-horned in one way or another), then I don't get it. We'll see how that works out :) But - I am at the stage I can appreciate looking at dolls without wanting to own each and every one I like.

I'd originally said I'd get one male and one female so I could sew clothes for them. BAHAHAHA... we see how that worked out.
