While she isn't the most posable doll in the world, she really doesn't seem that bad. Plus, I do like her face. She's kind of charming.

Yeah, it made my feelings soften towards her as well. It's interesting to see The Toy Box Philosopher take a much more positive view on Lammily while still thinking the media surrounding her is silly. I respect Emily's opinion a lot, so it made me rethink what I have heard on this doll. The comments section is of course aflame with contrary opinions, which is interesting to see. I don't think Lammily will replace anyone in the doll world; however, I do think she will stick around and add some shape diversity that is a bit lacking in the readily accessible playdoll market...just as long as she survives once the huge hype surrounding her release dies down. And she gets some better articulation, clothes and more diversity.

I think I personally react negatively to the word 'average' because I have some neurological differences, so whenever anyone says 'average' or 'normal' in reference to something relating to humans I automatically think it excludes me, is unattainable to me, or worse, is trying to assimilate me. So the marketing slogan, "Average Is Beautiful" gives me the impression that the line is saying only 'normal' or '(neuro)typical' people are beautiful, rather than it being inclusive and saying that everyone is beautiful(which would have been a waaay better slogan). This is definitely not encouraging me to like Lammily. In fact, whenever I read that I think that Lammily is a huge, unaccepting jerk touting her average-everything over all of doll- and humankind. I'm pretty sure that's not what was intended with that slogan...or the doll. I think Mr. Lamm must apologize to me and anyone else hurt by that slogan by making a doll who represents what about it hurts them. In my case, that would be a doll with mental disabilities...who is awesome. (Note: This is not just some selfish ploy so I can finally get a doll with neurological differences. At all. Definitely not. No ulterior motive here. :P) So I think the main problem I have with the conceptualization of Lammily is the big deal being made about being normal. Isn't there a big enough deal made about being normal in everyday life? I certainly don't want a doll who revolves all around that. I want a doll who says everyone is awesome, special snowflakes...and not just when Disability Awareness time comes around. I want a doll who really means it. So far, Lammily really isn't that. I hope her creator realizes how important that is though, and that she will be.

End tangent. :P

I hear you about having a different brain. I broke mine 20 years ago and there are times I think it didn't get put back together the same. It's people who think different that make this a better place to live. I have issues with average at times but I feel it's better than normal because normal means different things to different people. Aside from not liking Lammily's face my gripe is with her lack of joints, Obitsu and the others have spoiled me for that.

Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut is an interesting read about everyone being equal. There are some baby dolls with Downs Syndrome. There are some differences that are more frequent than others which could be made in to dolls or heads you could put on to other bodies. Others could be done by commission.

Maybe think about "average" in another direction:

Think back to elementary school math when you first learned about averages. The teacher gave you a list of numbers and had you get the average. Two funny things about this: 1) sometimes the average number wasn't actually one of the numbers on the list. 2)all of the numbers had to be added in to get the average.
On some level of thinking, an average includes everyone. If not everyone is added into the equation, then it is not a true average.

A few years back I saw a computer image of what the "average" person looked like. You know what? I'd be willing to bet that there isn't a single person on the face of the earth who looks like the image. In fact, I couldn't think of a single person I knew who came close to resembling it. Averages are funny that way.

For Lammily specifically, outside of body type, we really don't have too much insight into who Lammily is. If I understand what his intentions are correctly, the person who owns Lammily dictates who she is. They are only given a very loose sounding story; even her actual name is up to the doll owner. If she is truly "average", then there are going to be areas of her life that aren't average.

Glad someone else relates! ^^ And it's so inspiring to think that it is the people who think differently are the ones who change the world the most. Yeah, average is better than normal for sure, but the words are definitely related in my brain, unfortunately. :/ Normal is a dreadful word! Average is at least quantified. Yeah, I really, really hope Lammily's joints get improved. If they managed to produce a fuller highly articulated body then she would make an awesome body donor! Then you could make whatever doll you liked into a fuller figured, articulated doll, if you liked the look of Lammily's body more than the original. That would be awesome.

I'll need to look into that book. It sounds interesting! Oh, do you mean the Extra Special Dolls, I think they're called? They are really beautiful! I may need to break my animal doll only commitment and start getting into different ability doll collecting. I think that would be an exception I'd be very willing to make. c:

Quidam--That's a very refreshing way of looking at averages! Thank you for the different view on it. Average is sometimes used as a marginalizing word, so thank you for reminding me that that is incorrect! It is actually a very inclusive word; like you said, it is not an average unless everyone is taken into account; I will remember that. ^.^ I hope to see more from the Lammily line; there is a lot more potential in it than I previously realized. :)

I haven't heard of Extra Special Dolls. And since I got my degree I haven't been required to math but I've had to average.

Any doll is what you make of them. I can't remember how long I had my Monster High before I read their diaries, well written, or their toy commercials. I still treat official biographies as suggestions. Making up a person is one of the things playing dolls is about.

Really good and thorough review. Interesting that mr. Lamm contacted her for design advice! I took one look at the first coment and decided not to read the rest of them - there are lots of good points of critique to be made from both (all) sides, but I'm still mostly annoyed to learn that the designer decided to go with the click joints only because the prototype art didn't show any joints?! That seems like something he might have wanted to work out at an earlier stage of the design process.

She does look good in some of those outfits, though.

Personally I'm not too impressed with Lammily, and the biggest peeve for me is... Of course she won't fit anything but the super expensive clothes Lamm created unless you wanna make all of her clothess and shoes.

Which for me I'm no stranger to making clothes for dolls with odd sizes (drafting my own patterns since I got Haruka back in 2010) but I dunno... Just bugs me that for the price tag you don't get much else with the actual doll... If the doll was like Liv level of articulation then yeah....And customizable... Liv's big selling point was how interchangable their looks were... Lammily... It feels like Lamm wanted to make a point and wanted to make a profit on it. I dunno... There's just nothing appealing to me about her... The face is nice, but unless Lamm starts selling Lammily heads separately all faced up and ready for new bodies...Yeah I'm not buying it.

her body shape isn't pleasing to me. like if she had more of a waist indent she would be alright with that long torso, or longer legs but the straight torso... I don't know. she looks pregnant to me.

While I am not completely happy with how the doll turned out as opposed to the initial artwork, after reading the toyboxphilosopher's review I caved and still ordered it. (Initially I wanted to back the doll even at the beginning, but there was an issue with the system not accepting my credit card. Now you can order with paypal, which always is a big "danger" for me  )

I will have to abstain from trying to knit anything for that doll until she arrives (learned from the Makie ^^"), but then again, maybe she could share some Makie clothing? given her bodytype and and height.
Unfortunately, I do not think the Lammily will arrive before next year, with the holidays and all.

Do any of you already have a Lammily doll? Are there any shoes out there that could fit? (Without having to buy the ridiculous fashion packs; I mean "ridiculous" only in proportion to the price of the doll.)

I picked up TWO Lammily's new in the box at Goodwill today for 4.98$! I have no idea how this happened, still! She's very sweet-faced, I think. One is destined for a haircut or even a re-rooting but I'll keep the other original. :D
