Talking yourself out of a doll

Is it even possible once the fever takes hold? I swear I feel like I'm always chasing dolls lately and I don't like it. But already I'm in love with the new blue boy on Soom. I love his color, I've wanted a 1/6 boy for awhile to go with my j-dolls, he has such a friendly face! But when will this madness stop? Will it ever? Will I always want another doll? I just don't like where this is going.

The madness will never end.
By now I figure my indecision to not get this or that doll was a case of not seeing my character in that doll. I like their sculpts but there's a certain feeling missing. Since I shell characters, I don't argue with gut feeling, there's a wide range of dolls around and it keeps getting wider.

The only doll I waffle on but eventually gotten was Iplehouse Luna and that like about 3 years later. I liked her before but had no solid reason to get her until after Jack(Iple Dexter) showed up. And she's like an upsize version of my 1/6 Volks Type C-Obitsu hybrid.

I just remind myself that the dolls I already have still need be finished and that new dolls that appeal to me will always come around. That usually does the trick....unless a doll I already wanted goes on sale, then I'm doomed. Although I think it might be easier for people like me, who don't do the pre-made character thing (shelling? I'm still fairly new so I don't know all the lingo).

I have a hard time controlling myself with new Monster High and Power Team Elite sculpts I don't have but I'm also running out of room. There are action figures and other things I can't enjoy because I have no place to put them. I'm at the threshold of enjoying-hoarding so I am very conscious of everyone who comes in. There are limited edition/ limited time/ never seen that before/ sudden opportunity rules that might make me buy a doll now but I try and give myself time before I buy.

If possible I want to give a new doll a month before I buy, it also gives me time to save. This lets me see if it's a quick fad that will get out of my system or if there's staying power because I go through flavors of the month with things. The last doll I brought home was Liberace, he needed TLC, painting, and clothes all of which I enjoyed doing for him. The one before that was a Mattel Ryan who is still in the bucket with the other Kens.

Give yourself standards on quality, appearance, joints, stuff you can't change. Make the dolls have contests why they need to live with you.

It can totes be tough. Ruva and DollyKim both make good points though. I find that if I can resist the urge and wait to see if it'll pass, and if I can keep in mind all the works-in-progress at home, then it's easier to talk myself out of buying that doll.

Don't worry, you'll pick go.up the lin.

Shelling is easier for me to avoid the "OMG!!! Random pretty doll!! WANTS!!!!!!" Since I do have a huge list of dolls I like.
I have an equally huge list of characters I would like to shell, but at current point I'm limited by wanting to avoid having characters who are too similar in personality to the existing dolls.

This
Anyway, I used to buy a lot on the impulse (almost 2/3 of my 1/6 gang are impulse buys), but now that I'm mainly interested in MSD and I'm also running out of display and storing space I'm trying my best to resist the urge.
Like Iwa_Hoshi, I decided to focusing on shelling characters and to not buy anymore dolls just because they're pretty. They have to (metaphorically) scream me "I'm (insert Feles's OC name here), take me!" or inspire me to create a character for them (like happened for my Dollzone Freddy). That (and sticking to the MSD size) helped me a lot to keep my wishlist small (less than 4 dolls), at least for now. And I, too, I don't want to have character too similar to already shelled one, and also I don't want to have more than one doll with a certain, specific style of clothing. So no more than a pretty lolita girl, no more than a sexy one...
And mainly, I agree Kim has a good point. Waiting some time before getting a doll really helps understanding if it's just an infatuation or not.

Fortunately, I'm actually quite good at talking myself out of everything. Okay, sometimes that's bad, but sometimes it's good too. But hopefully the madness will never end because we get so much joy from it!

I have a mental checklist I go through everytime I feel an impulse buy coming on.
