Heyo~

We're going to be getting a RS Ya in the very near future - her face is absolutely adorable!
But the matter of getting a faceup or not is bothering us . . . do we order one through RS? Send away for one after Ya gets here?
Do it at home? Do pastels, makeups, etc work for giving dimension and color? Should we stick to paints?

Advise and comments on the subject would be greatly appreciated!

The surest option is to pay to Resin Soul to do company's own face up - you'll get what you pay for. But if you don't like it, or want something different you can consider either sending the head on some other face up artist or doing it by yourself. Both of these are bit more risky in their own way - with thrid party face up artist there will be question of quality (and I have heard some horror stories about doll heads never coming back), and making it yourself it might not be as easy as it seems.

But yeah. I personally like doing my own face ups, because when you are using proper equipment (I'll list them later) face up is always removable and you may do it over and over again. You don't need to worry about "ruining the doll".

So. First rule is: oil is bad. Resin do not like oils - oil stains. So keep away from human make ups (they usually contains oils), oil pastels, and non-water suluable colored pencils.

Safe things to use: chalk pastels - usually softer is better, water colors and water color pencils (Derwent makes Inktense pencils, which are water soluable, but contain too strong pigments - so Do Not use them!) and acrylic paints. I have heard some people use also gouache colors (like water colors, but stronger) and some human make ups - after made sure they'll not contain oil, but I haven't tried either.

And is you like glitter, you may want to use glitter dust, too. CrobiDoll makes fine powder, but I think that nail art glitters are fine, too. ^^

If you want, I can link some specific items I use (or similar ones), so you can visit your local hobby store and buy from there.

Anyway, either if you'll get company face up, send the head to artist or do it by yourself I am sure your Ya will be beautiful. ^^

She_Flame is dead on. Factory face-up is guaranteed good quality and simple design. But don't let that scare you away from trying face-ups yourself! I recommend buying some wooden nobs or wooden eggs at a craft store and practicing on them first. I use water-soluble acrylic paint. It's a different look, but you might like it too. You can see the factory face-ups for most companies on their respective websites. I think that Resinsoul and Bobobie post theirs. You can see them also at the Junkyspot if they're in stock.

The taller elf in this picture is a Bobobie. My sister got the factory faceup. You can see it's very subtle.

RS/BBB do very nice simple faceups and unlike many other companies do not charge and arm and a leg for them. I have may dolls from them and I've gotten with or without and always been happy either way.

I like to get the BBB/RS face-up then add to it. Using theirs as a guideline for eyebrows is actually quite nice if you just want to add some additional shading. I suck at eyebrows so this is a nice bonus. If you do, be super careful about spraying MSC on it. I've found that the RS face-up gets quite gummy (maybe it's just me?) so wait for it to dry before adding extra pastels. I learned that one the hard way.

Without a faceup will the eyebrows just be flat resin. . . are they textured. . .would they be still eyebrow like - or would we have to create them through makeup effects?

Without a faceup, the doll won't have eyebrows.
