Historical doll monstrosity

I love it when one of the history blogs I read brings up a doll related post. I learn something and I get to share with everyone here :)

In this case: http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/33183 if you click through you will learn about the Creeping Baby Doll. Yes, that is the real name of the doll although Creepy Baby Doll would be more accurate. The article's title - Creeping Baby Doll is back....FOR YOUR SOUL - does rather a good job of expressing my reaction to the thing, that's for sure.

Think the Mechano Baby Head toy from Toy Story...only intentionally created by an adult.

XD

Ok, they're a little rough on automata, maybe, but I will agree that a lot of the older ones skirt (and sometimes plummet into) the uncanny valley. (Being a bit of a robotics nerd since I was about 4 years old or so means they're a subject I've read up on... tho, somehow, I managed to miss that creepy little gem.)

I kind of want one now, but scaled down to a convenient desktop size. XD Like, say, a couple inches tops. Imagine having a few of them, winding them up, and having a 'baby race'. XD

TBH, I've always found baby dolls a little creepy. Even as a small child I never played with baby dolls or even child dolls - I was all about Barbie, never Skipper, though my mom kept buying me Tutti and Heidi and Jan dolls (presumably because they were my approximate age and they were, well, cheap).

A crawling baby doll...I would have probably run away from very quickly.

And don't even get me STARTED on Reborns. *shudders uncontrollably and clutches Cherry for comfort*

Just jumping in to say that lightinthebox is NOT a good site. They use a lot of stolen photos and their products are...let's just say, not what they're advertised to be. It's bordering on scam and possibly a false storefront for an infamous scammer, Milanoo, which has an F rating on the BBB: http://www.bbb.org/chicago/business-rev ... n-88383915
And a bunch of very bad reviews of them: http://light-in-the-box.pissedconsumer.com/
Sorry for butting in but I just wanted to bring this up! I hope you don't mind.

And I'm with you on reborns embyquinn. -hugs unicorn doll-

Not at all! Thanks a lot for the heads-up. I'd almost forgot about getting one of those (and probably won't now, considering), but I'm glad I know about that site otherwise it might have crossed my mind again later and I still had the link to the one there... No one wants to get ripped off! XD

Yeah, Reborns hit a Creepy Button for me, too. I can understand wanting a realistic doll. And if they're very well done a picture of them doesn't plop into Uncanny Valley on me... but a video or if I ever saw one in person?

Here you have this thing that looks as much like a real baby as possible. And that's fine... until you notice it's not moving at all. Not breathing...

So, basically, you have something that looks like a freshly killed baby corpse. I think that would hit all kinds of bad instinctual triggers.
