Ever have a 'flaw' become part of the character?

Ever have a 'flaw' become part of the character?

Postby WhiteDove01s » Tue Apr 21, 2015 5:23 am

So, I now have this secondhand Cleo with this smudgy black stain on her cheek/chin area. (There will be pictures, soon, I just need to get em off the camera.)

I thought the stain would be easy to get rid of, but... rubbing alcohol didn't work. Even the Dremel didn't work (I use a dremel to remove factory face-ups). I was trying acne creme, but it didn't look like it was making a dent.

I just stopped and washed it off, because my crazy mind just built up a character for the doll based on her having that stain. XD (I had a name picked out but not much else.)

Apparently, Meritamen was somehow displaced from her native time and, after that, discovered an aptitude for mechanical repair that would probably have never been realized in ancient Egypt. She's almost always tinkering on something, forgets and touches her face, and... well, that 'oil smudge' is practically a near-permanent accessory now.

It doesn't even contradict with the heavy makeup, as makeup in her original time was used for reasons of protection and certain traditions... it wasn't even thought of as being 'to make yourself pretty' like in this day and age... so she can still be a messy tomboyish critter and have heavy eyeshadow and lipstick. XD

And it also means I now have someone else on hand to make sure my 1/6 scale Star Wars droids are getting their checkups!

I have a damaged AOD Qing head that someone had tried to modify. There was a badly done lip sanding, so I put a scar to make the damage look intentional, and then when I re-sculpted all the features over it with Apoxie, I ended up leaving the scar because it was part of the character now. I'm even reshelling the character and I'll be carving that scar into his new shell. :D

My girl Summer (bellybutton Barbie with Beech Feet) has a large scarred patch on her leg - she arrived with a patch of odd peeling there that's apparently a factory flaw/airbubble in the layers of vinyl. With no way to really 'fix' that, I've enhanced it instead. In fact, it's still a little in progress as I decided paint wasn't enough and put some caulk on to better emulate a scar texture... I still need to paint the caulk.

What sets her apart from Meri, tho, is I have no idea how Summer got the scar. Clearly something's happened in her past, but it hasn't popped into my head yet. With Meri, I was trying to get rid of the stain when my brain just goes "wait, that's supposed to be there! And here's why..."

I am so glad that the dolls arrived! Yay! I look forward to seeing your customs.

I am also not sad that the stain is still there, since you have plans. I have no idea what that is, she was in storage! That is why I priced her low, it was not coming off with soap and water.

So glad she has a good home with someone who will have fun with her.

Yay!

Pics are up in the 1/6 forum now, it seemed the most appropriate spot to cover that.

I know Kiki-chan78's original Seiki head had a nick out of it that looked like a scar on his face. About three heads later, every time a new face-up is done, she puts that 'scar' in, because that IS Seiki!

I do that a lot, since most of my dolls are second hand and some of the new ones have wonky faceprints or whatever anyway. (Although if you do want to get rid of a stain, acne cream and similar treatments can take weeks to have effect.)

Please don't use acne cream. It can cause vinyl to discolor. I've seen too many dolls with neon orange spots on their legs to recommend it.
About flaws, Rolant has a tiny dip on his chest where there was a bubble in the resin. I sanded it out mostly, but it's still there a bit. I loved working on him and he feels more unique because of it.
I also have a liv with a "prosthetic" hand because her original was horribly chewed.

I'm pretty lucky. I haven't received a damaged doll since my Barbies when I was a little girl. I've damaged a few, and couldn't think of a good story for them. Poor Lola wore a dark purple dress too long and looks bruised in some places now. There's just no good story for that. Fortunately, they're starting to fade.

What I meant was anything with peroxide, like Twin Pines Remove-Zit, needs some time to work.
