To Vinyl or Not to Vinyl

I'm beginning to think that aside from my handful of MH dolls, vinyl just isn't for me. I recently bought a Tonner Nu Mood Sidney (wigged) and immediately regretted it because I didn't like her sculpt. I put her up on Ebay the next day and sold her.

So I thought, okay I'll try a Delilah Noir. They have inset eyes, a head cap and a wig. I found a great deal on a fullset Lady Onyx and she arrived today. I actually like her grayish-cream skin tone. But she had never been removed from her box - or her black outfit. I took stock of her condition and she has a couple really obvious stain spots on her back. Only there was no dye bleeding through the tissue paper wrapped around her torso, so I have no clue where the stains came from. One of them is a straight line on the back of her arm that's nearly a 1/4 inch long and it's very dark. The other is a splotchy inch long stain that runs horizontally across the center section of her upper back. It's much lighter, but neither would come out with a light buff of a damp Magic Eraser. I'm too afraid to apply too much pressure. The stains would probably be covered up with clothing, but I'm worried that any color clothing will stain her more. And, I hate that the feet have such limited mobility - why did they make her that way?! Oh, and the soles of the boots were loose. Not cool.

I also have a fullset Ellowyne Alone on Sunday coming. I bought a basic Ellowyne last year that just stood on display all this time because we just never bonded and she had manufacturing issues (I've put her up for sale, too). I'm really hoping this new one works for me. From the photos I've seen of her, she's really quite lovely.

All I know is that if a resin BJD came with all the issues the vinyl ones I've gotten had, I'd been pissed. I don't think I'm a really picky person by nature, but maybe I've become spoiled by the workmanship of resin dolls?

I'm already thinking about turning around and selling the Lady Onyx. I'm not willing to put that dress back on her at this point.

Well, there is vinyl, and there is vinyl. I find the limited mobility of the domestically made vinyl dolls to be rather a drawback, although that said I do have a couple of Delilah Noirs. However, I consider them to be more "display" dolls as opposed to "play" dolls. I also found the boots that came with my Dark Delilah to be crap, disappointing given the price tag on them. Then again, maybe that's why the dolls appear to have been discontinued.

Then there is obitsu vinyl. Stains easily - sometimes with only minimal contact with fabric. But damn, I wouldn't trade those dolls for anything!!!! Poseability out the wazoo, lovely faces, replaceable parts if necessary. Yep, they are worth the price and the occasional pain. My one girl, Genet, has severe staining on her arms and legs from a black outfit - so I have replacement legs and arms that I use if I want her to wear something where the stains would show. Easy enough to pop on and off! If I want to I can buy some Remove-zit and even clean the stains off - but frankly with Genet the replacement pieces works out better.

So, before you give up vinyl, you may need to just try a different type :)

Body suits or lining with white fabric under dark clothes helps too. If I could afford one of the MSD sized obitsu, I'd have one in a heartbeat... and I have four resin in that size that I adore.

Also if you want to get rid of the stains, get the Remove-Zit and Formula 9-1-1 from Twin Pines. I know that's what Kiki-chan78 uses on Omi... and we all know how much he LOVES to stain. ^_~

Greyhaunt said it, there's vinyl and there's Obitsu. I wouldn't even put the 1/6 Obitsu in the same category as the fashion and play line dolls. And Yanagi-sen is right with lining or body suits.

My little soft bust Obitsus have fared better in the anti stain department from lessons the 60 learned but he's so old that it's all a part of who he is. For your next vinyl try an Obitsu, if you don't like it someone else will.

Thanks, y'all. I've shied away from the big Obitsu dolls simply because of the cost and the staining issues (and quite frankly, I wish they had more facial sculpts). The money I've spent on the three dolls I bought would have more than paid for a MSD Obitsu.... You are giving me something to consider.

I have high hopes for the Ellowyne, though.

Get a soft bust 1/6 Obitsu, I think they're made of similar stuff so you can get an idea and they have an elf head.

:D I love my obitsu due to the parts can be replaced and l just use a body stocking from cool cats. I planning getting a obitsu 65cm girl (she not realy 65cm she more like 63cm) and l also like volks DD's as well.

I'm specifically looking at MSD size dolls right now. My 1/6 dolls are display only at this point.

I stick with vinyl mostly because of the price, but also for the ease. From what I've read, I just feel the resin is too fussy for me and since I don't do very much photography, the posing abilities aren't an issue for me. I really just want to sew for them. However, even a vinyl shouldn't be stained. My girls have acquired some light staining from black tights on their feet mostly, but it's not a big issue for me since it's my fault. I haven't really tried to fix them yet either. (One of these days I really do need to order some of that cleaner.)

If I paid full price for something, and it came stained, I'd be sending it back, unless I wanted it badly enough to accept it or ask for a partial refund.

I adore my Ell's and 'Alone on Sunday' is gorgeous! I hope you can bond with her.

Vinyl sucks.
