So obitsu and glass eyes....please help

Postby Thelittlevintagegirl » Sun Apr 09, 2017 9:06 am

It's been five ever since I've been into obitsu and vinyl quasi bjd dolls and I recently bought a obitsu head for a body I had laying around. I got her a faceup and everything and she's adorable however I have one major issue and one tiny one.

Major issue--the pretty 6mm eyes I got won't fit!

My doll sports a 27HD-F06W-E 27cm obitsu head which is suppose to take 6mm eyes but the eyes seem too big.

Further research brought me to a single post here where someone mentioned oval eyes don't fit in obitsus and I think these eyes might be oval. But since they were pretty and since I don't know how to tell the shape of eyes I wanted to come here first before buying new ones.

First, is there anyway to cut oval eyes so that they'll be small enough to just fit in the head? The eyes I have are glass.

Second if I can't salvage the glass eyes I have where are some places where I can get 6mm eyes that fit?

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm starting to feel like maybe I'm not cut out for this custom doll adventure lol

Oh and also if anyone has any tricks and tips on getting a loose wig to work that would be grand. The smallest wig I have is a size four and it loosely glides off this dolly's face.

I had a similar problem but not because they were oval but that the high domed tiny eyes make your doll look funny and unreal to me. I prefer low dome eyes that don't glare just by looking at them.

I tried all the major brands that offer 6mm or small eyes and all were high domed, then I finally found these:
http://www.glasseyesonline.com/index.ph ... &cPath=3_8

They only come in blue, green or brown, but I really like them because they actually look like EYES in person and in photography, rather than the high domed eyes that seem to always make my dolls have 'red eye' or glare. :)

I don't think you can use the oval eyes at all unless you cut the slots in the doll's head entirely off, and then affix the oval eyes with putty or sculpey or something similar. That would work but you'd need to use a hobby knife and be very careful not to go through the front. Just carve off the inside 'donut' slots that hold the eyes in.

If you'd rather not do that, the tiny glass eye option is above or if you don't mind high domed look, I think JunkySpot offers them in the 1/6 size. :)
If you're unsure of the size to use, measure the doll eye holes and also the 'donut slots' in the inner head and see what size it measures. The site above lists what size each eye is. :) I think you want 6mm, but better be safe than sorry and measure first to be sure. :)

As for the wig, you can buy a silicone head cap, then the wigs often stay on or you can use velcro to affix. We use a piece of sticky side velcro to stick to the head and then for the wig, a regular sew on piece of the opposite side of velcro. That works, too. :)

Thank you so much for the advice! I think I'll order the eyes from the shop you suggested :). Just out of curiousity, do you have any photos of the eyes? I'd love to see what they look like in a doll! Also Velcro sounds perfect for the wig! Thank you so much I'll totally look into it ^^

No problem! Glad to help!

I can't find other pics I've done with the actual glass eyes (I know there was a girl I made with the blue eyes---but can't locate any pics of her right now. :( I sold her to someone on this forum but I don't remember when, to look it up.)

Anyway, I used the brown glass eyes in this doll:

Here you can see the brown glass eyes in the boy, while the high domes are in the girl:

See how she looks so 'spaced out' and glare-y? I don't like high dome eyes, particularly for 1/6 dolls, so I have replaced her eyes with the glass ones now, but didn't take any pics yet.

:hugs:

Aw your dolls look adorable! I can see what you mean about the glare factor though and I like the low dome look a lot better. Do the eyes from the shop you found just pop right in then? Thanks so much for your advice ^^

Yes, the eyes from glasseyesonline.com come embedded on a sturdy wire. You clip them to the length you want (usually about 3/4" or 1") so you can 'hold the wire' with your fingers or pliers, and then holding it by the wire, you shove the eyes into the sockets.

Just be sure to purchase the proper sized eyes. Measure the sockets or eyeholes and then read on that page I linked which eyes match up to the size you need. :)

I really recommend the glass eyes as they aren't glare-y or odd looking. They look like real eyes. :)

Good luck and God bless!!!!!

So a little update--the new eyes came in and I realized I had the right eyes all along (I do like the low dome look better though) however I managed to shove one eye in and the other simply won't go in, I stabbed my fingers bloody trying. So does anyone have any advice on shoving eyes in? I've tried my hands and twizers and I stabbed myself on the back of the eyes so much i started bleeding without nothing. Any advice would be swell :)

Hi!

Do you have a faceup on the head already? If not, just boil a cup of water and drop the head in the cup for 30 seconds, then remove from water and the eyes will go right in.

If you have already a faceup on the head, use a hairdryer (carefully! Don't burn your fingers) on the inside of the head, aiming as closely to the sockets as possible.
After 25-30 seconds on high heat, take the head and the eyes will pop right in.

Make SURE to remove any hair before you boil or hairdry. :)

Good luck!!!
