Dwali Barbie....

Postby magkelly » Sat Nov 17, 2012 2:10 pm

Lucked out a while back when a friend gave me this girl. She's a gorgeous, expensive little doll. $100 is quite common for her boxed so she's way above my budget normally. I was just testing out my new toy an Olympus Pen E-PL1, my very first M43 camera and using her as a model. Her hair is too messy. I should have really brushed it better but otherwise I like this shot, particularly the bokeh. This is a new lens for me an older MF Vivitar 1:1.8 and this is the first time I've really used it. Works well on the Oly, I think. Everything on this camera is MF, at least for now as digital lenses for it cost too much for me to even think about right now. I've never really tried to MF on an LCD screen, and I found it a bit difficult. I really need to get the optional VF I think. My eyes are kind of bad today besides. So between that and trying to focus in a new way this isn't my best attempt. Could have been a bit better. But it's okay, for now...

wow! When I was younger I always thought I would collect those expensive Barbies, the international ones and the Bob Mackie ones and all, but I ended up with BJDs instead hehe. I still love those fancy Barbie dolls though!

It's an outfit from the My Scene Hollywood Bling Nia doll. Dwali originally came in a turquoise blue and fuchsia sari apparently but when I was given mine she had something else on. I actually like it better on her than I do on the MS doll. It really seems to fit her. It's very Bollywood, laugh. Isn't she gorgeous though? This is one of the most beautiful dolls with this sculpt that I've ever seen. (She's a real favorite. I would never part with her.) She caused a bit of a furor this doll when she was released. She was too pale for some people's taste apparently for a supposedly Indian doll. But I've seen women in Bollywood ads who look exactly like this so I'm guessing there are more pale skinned women in India too. I don't usually keep dolls on muse bodies but I made an exception here because it really seems to suit her. I tried her on Fashionita and Liv bodies, but I just liked this better.

This is Nia. She's lovely too, and the coloring for makeup is very similar, but I just think this outfit works better on Dwali for some reason....

She's gorgeous! That dress is very Bollywood, indeed.

Same! When I was a (littler) kid, I wanted to have a whole room full of fancy Barbies...now I want a room full of Iplehouse boys (and maybe a few Fairyland ladies, too).

My niece says all big dolls that are not baby dolls are Barbies. She means that in an affectionate way and I agree because what is a bigger doll more articulated doll but a Barbie meant for adults? It's the same instinct. You're still playing with Barbies, it's just now that they are articulated, made of fancier materials, and lots bigger. I read an article the other day where Mel Odom the creator of Gene basically said that when he made Gene he made her intentionally to the same ratio to an adult's hands as Barbie was to little kid's hands. So she would feel the same to adults when they played with her and invoke how they used to play with Barbie as children. I thought that was cool. He actually did make Gene dolls that rather invoke Barbie too. There's a blond basic Wu Gene with a long pony tail and bangs and later a Wu bubble cut Gene that are very obviously modeled on the bubble cut Barbies.

She is really beautiful, and the dress suits her perfectly. She's so exotic and mysterious. I love her.
