Changing a Custom

Okay, so that's probably a bit of an odd topic heading, but I'll explain further. I have these couple of customs (talked about them here) and I've been looking at them a lot lately. They're still WIPs, and while I do like the original idea behind them, I realised that they would make great stand-ins for two characters from a show I really like that has now finished. Now, for the girl, all I need to do really is get a different head/wig, but for the guy... well I'll need to cut his wig to shape (not so hard) and commission an outfit (that looks like this)

Basically, I guess what I'm wondering with this thread (besides would anyone have a rough price idea for how much the outfit might cost at 1/6 scale) is has anyone ever done this before? Looked at one of their dolls and went "...nope, changing you now". Or are we a relatively content lot?

I can't help with your first question but for the second one, I've changed my dolls a lot. At the beginning of the year, I decided that two of my oldest dolls simply weren't fitting their characters any more. I was still liked the physical dolls though, so I made up new characters with completely different looks for them.

The only one who has changed completely, I've repainted eye color or touched up hair to enhance a character, was my Monty Python Holy Grail Dead Collector. At first he was generic Eric Idle then he went all Timey Wimey.

I'm not sure about this, but I suspect obitsu slim males can fit barbie clothes, so you may be able to find some pieces similar to the outfit in your picture and just add details. Winner's circle barbie has a jacket that seems fairly similar to the one in your pic.
As to changing a finished custom, I think most bjd collectors do that; it may just be a fresh face-up or a different wig, but making changes to our dolls is one of the most fun parts about this hobby.
I wouldn't be afraid to completely change the character of a doll either if I feel like it's time, though I think for me a little of the old personality would probably stick.

I get like this with everything... But you know me, I'm too fickle with my collections!

I've been thinking about the outfit. You could probably pick up the other bits easy enough, it's the jacket and waistcoat really... Still not much help though! It's a shame there aren't any good historical military figures out at the moment, for jacket nicking purposes. It's all modern or roman. =/

With me, I'm always tweaking who should be married to who (especially if I introduce a new head into the mix...).

I think changing our dolls is a pretty fundamental part of this hobby actually! Nothing to worry about on that front.

The second question I can actually help you with, considering I commission the clothing for my customs because I cannot sew for dog poo. If you'd like a more detailed, personal recommendation list (and one shop I'd personally avoid), just go on and PM me, but on average, for an outfit like the picture (it's a bit blurry but I think I get the gist of it) it would cost anywhere between $50-100 depending on who you use, if you do the whole thing outfit or just specific parts, etc.

I gave my first doll a new name after having her for a while. I've never done a complete fashion overhaul, but I won't rule it out for the future.

Ah, thank you for all the replies! It's great to hear all the different opinions on the subject. I am planning on going through with it all, it's just going to take a while because money and so on. We all know the tale; it's the bane for every doll collector. I will need to cut the male's wig, which I am a bit nervous about, but I'm planning on taking my time with it, and keeping a close eye. What's good for holding a style for doll's wigs, btw? Any hints/tips? Sorry to be a pest to you lovely people, but I am still very much an ignorant person in this hobby - though I am doing my best to learn!

@Nella That's really something similar to what I'm going through at the moment. I like the dolls, I just want to change up their looks and ... make them into different characters. Okay, that probably doesn't sound quite as good ><

@DollyKim Seriously, I once again need to comment on your amazing talent. You have skill, dude!

@yarwel I think I'm lucky in that, in hindsight, the female doll has a similar personality to who I want to change her too. I looked up the Barbie you mentioned, and sadly the coat is too short. Similar-ish, but a bit too short for what I want. Thank you for the recommendation though!

@plastig_ffantastig Oh, there probably are decent figures, they're just probably so very, very far out of my price range.

@Jobee I don't usually do the whole changing outfits thing, so this will be a big thing for me. Cool for you to give a doll a new name though.
