These knockoff ones that have been out lately would be tricky to add to another doll. Midge's belly actually came off so she could be not pregnant if you wanted (or while the baby was out). It's hard plastic and the baby fits in it and then it goes on with a strong magnet to hold it in place (with the other magnet inside Midge).
Wasn't there also an art doll that came out with the same setup? I want to say it was porcelain rather than resin. Maybe I'm misremembering things.
I remember when I was a kid seeing a pregnancy doll that had a soft abdomen, so instead of the bump coming off there was a compartment in the spine and it simulated the different trimesters. Occasionally I have thoughts about how I would make that sort of pregnancy belly, but I'm pretty sure it would require a level of skill and equipment I don't possess.
