Back when I first altered my Liv Jake I cut a circle out of the top of his head since I had intended for him to wear wigs and it was easier to get inside that way. Now I want to give him a shorter style and I am not sure how to go about it. I don't think I can use a wig so I will have to root it but he now has a gaping hole in his head since I threw out the circle I had cut out. I am considering using a wig and then rooting some hair around the wig so the plastic cap doesn't show but I am worried that will make the hairline go too low. Or should I just bite the bullet and cut a replacement circle from the extra Jake I have in my parts drawer and glue it in?

Also any tips on styling guy doll hair in general would be helpful.

Have you considered a fur wig? I think it may work better with shorter styles than a synthetic dollie hair wig.

Mohair wigs tend to work very well on guy dolls and they can be found at Goodwill on porcelains and such. I go that route most of the time when I'm looking for a shorter guy style. Mohair wigs tend to be a bit fuller which looks more natural when you go cutting them short.

I was not planning on buying any wigs. I have an excess of Liv and Moxie Teenz wigs, including several duplicate wigs. Even if I end up rooting I plan on using the hair from the wig. Part of me kinda wishes now I hadn't lopped off Jake's hair since it was the right color but I didn't know it at the time. I really want the hair to look like real hair and most fur wigs just don't have the right texture.

In all serious-ness, I would put something in his head, like pieces of a plastic bag or a paper towel to fill up the hole. Cover it with tape or something and then try something like this:

Okay I have pretty much decided that I'll be rerooting them since they were rooted before. Of course that stull leaves two big questions.

Should I do any changes to their faceup before or after I root them and can anyone give me any tips on how to style the hair once it is rooted?

Style the hair first when it's long - use hot water! Cut it with tiny scissors - I invested in actual scissors for hair cutting that don't make things all the same length but it's easy to do with ordinary scissors if you are careful. Have you thought about re-rooting one of the Liv wigs? Otherwise, make a cover for the hole out of Buckram (get it from fabric stores) and root through that. The buckram can't handle hot water - that's what you use to form it in the first place - so you will need to style differently. Parabox has tutorials for styling hair on their website.

Thanks for the tips. I forgot to mention that I was wrong about thinking I threw that piece out. When I went looking for something else I found it so I am gluing it back into place.

I still need to know which step goes first. I really want to paint the facial hair and eyebrows with good ol acrylic paint but I need to know if I can do it now or if I should wait until after the hair is done.

Rooting and all hair work first, face-up and other paint work last.
