Can anyone help me with a 12'' male doll sizing issue?

Postby MeltedCaramel » Wed Dec 25, 2013 6:37 am

Hello there board. I realize this one might be a bit of a hard question. I have a doll head that came from a 14'' Tsukuda Hobby doll, but his head is perfectly fine for a 12'' doll. The only problem is so far the only doll that remotely fits his size is the Medicom RAH blank doll. Besides the fact that I would have to literally smash the RAH head off with a hammer (RAH blank heads don't come off  ), the body type just...isn't right, and I would have to dremel the neck peg to a smaller width. The closest I've found that I think would fit would be a Fashion Royalty Homme doll, but they're, well, to put it lightly, really freaking expensive for a doll that may or may not fit my needs. I also need to know if FRH knees have full articulation on them, because the doll would need to have full articulation. The Tsukuda Hobby head is about the same size as a Medicom head and falls somewhere within the acceptable range of "Natural Skin Colour" if that helps any.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a tall, somewhat slim, fully articulated doll body? The character is meant to be a bit of a pretty boy, but he's also a bodyguard of sorts and is tall and imposing (hence the 14'' size).

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!! <3

Put the Medicom RAH down and back away slowly. RAH arms fall off, it's the only 1/6 figure I would say to buy at your own risk. I sent my guy back to the factory, they repaired him and his arms fell off again. My guy has screws in the back of his neck which make it easy enough to change the head. His neck is a completely separate piece.

RAH slender third from the right in this picture which has a Ken, Volks, and Obitsu boys http://dolfielittles.com/ency/boys8.jpg

Take a picture of the neck joint on the head you want to use and I can help figure out who you can try.

Hey there DollyKim!! :) Trust me, I own a few Medicoms and I know exactly how fragile they are, to the point where I barely take them out of the boxes. The RAH body I got on the cheap though and it's actually a completely different construction that a regular Medicom body, I can't even explain, the shoulder blades move for more realistic movement.

And thank you very much for offering to help. My doll head has no actual neck joint though, he's sort of like an Obitsu head, where it cuts off up underneath the chin. Like I said, it's an old doll, from around 1997, so it's a bit of a tough fit. The Fashion Royalty men are tall and have the best fit for the body, but if the knees don't bend it's useless. If you could suggest an alternative, I'd be grateful. :)

Edit: OH!! Also, my Medicom has no screw on or near the neck joints, period, which was why I was thinking of resorting to making like a Looney Tunes character and taking a mallet to his annoying blank head to get it off of the neck.

It's easier to tell on the head with pictures, several of my guys have short attached necks, both Triads, the BBI, the Hot Toys, the Ken with Wrists, and Cpt Jack.

I have a Medicom Phantom of the Paradise that I gently pose and I think it's his suit that keeps him together.

FR guys knees do bend as I have a collection of them. Your other choices depending on the size of the head hole. You can use Traid EVO, Omgea, Ken's jointed body, LIV Jake's body, Moxie Teen body, etc.

maywong, thank you for your advice, I looked up everyone on the list, and they're all just a bit too muscular. The FR guy seems to be the best choice so far, as that's the body type I'm going for, but if anyone knows if Tonner dolls bend at the chest he seems like a likely candidate too.

As for DollyKim, it's an anime style doll head with absolutely no neck in sight, so the base body would need a full neck, which is why I'm gravitating towards things like the 12'' Fashion Royalty dolls. Honestly Fashion Royalty seems to be the best fit at the moment. I just wish the darn things weren't so expensive to throw away on a "maybe"! Good thing the size difference between the female custom I'm making from the same series is much smaller than he is, because she's going on an Obitsu 23cm body.

Medicom really needs to use a different plastic. I completely sympathize with your woes about your Medicom. I keep my Roy Mustang in his box (thankfully I bought him MIB, which was quite a lucky find for a doll released in 2007) because I'm terrified of breaking him since he was my "holy grail" doll. (Eh, it may seem silly but he opened the door for all my other dollie friends!!!)

Here is a pix of a Moxie teen body. It is very close to that of a FR body but a lot cheaper. As you can see the Ken head is like a Obitsu as it does not have a neck connected to the head. The Moxie teen body has a neck connected to the body like the FR dolls. The joints on a Moxie teen are like that of an FR.

BTW I do have 1 body for sale.

Mmmm, thank you very much for the picture maywong!! Honestly, I'm not too fond of the Moxie body. I dislike the fact that the torso is essentially static. I tend to go for the more high-end in terms of articulation. Truthfully even the FR body isn't ideal, but it's what fits best for this particular project because of being long and lean. After some serious thinking (well, my wallet thought for me really, it came down to what I wanted more and since I'm "updating" and not doing a full custom I figure the doll can live with his original body until I get some more funds). In fact I may even be nixing the custom doll for a bit because all of the seamstresses are either backed up by months and months or they're insanely expensive. I've already got three customs in various stages of completion and I figure I'm starting to put more stress on myself rather than it being a creative, relaxing outlet, and I really don't need more stress on top of my medical issues.

But I really want to thank you for the advice and the offer of the body for sale. It means a lot that the members on this board are so helpful, it makes customizing much less stressful and I can concentrate on the fun parts of it. :D

Off the top of my head I can't think of a long necked body that looks great naked with natural joints in my collection.
