Can I Get Some Help With 1/4 BJD Head...

Postby magkelly » Mon Apr 01, 2013 9:32 pm

Please? Most of my dolls are 1/6 or 1/4 sized. I have more 1/4 clothes to work with than 1/3. You all know I've been salivating over Luo but in all practicality it would be better if I went with the Miro 1/4 doll bodies and made a 1/4 boy and girl set since with my budget having more than 2 BJD's just isn't likely to ever happen. It would cost me far less, shrug. I have to choose and choose well for what I can afford. The Miro bodies are inexpensive and look good from the pics I've seen so obligingly posted in the Miro thread here. My bro has said he'll spring for either one 1/3 doll body or 2 1/4 bodies for my birthday if I chip in for the shipping so I think I am going to go for it. I'm looking, and looking at heads for down the road though and my mind I think is just playing tricks on me.

I need the opinion of a few people with keener eyes than mine. I think the Luo sculpt is just darling but he's a really big boy and very expensive. I've kind of been looking at the other dolls out there, the heads mostly and wondering if there might be a 1/4 doll boy head out there somewhere that has a similar look that won't bankrupt me to buy it? I think what I am responding to is mostly the face up the fact that he looks more like a mature guy than a kid. I like the shape of his eyes and mouth a lot too I guess. Is there a 1/4 boy head out there that I could buy that doesn't cost more than say $0-100 that might face up to look something like Luo? Or barring that like Bowie? That I could also get on board with as I'm a total Bowie fan and my initial idea before lovely Luo totally sidetracked me was to make a very Bowie looking guy.

The female doll, she's looking easy. There are at least half a dozen semi-mature female heads out there under $75 that I could happily live with if I had to buy new. But my boy? Not nearly so easy. My bro buying me the 1/4 Miro bodies really helps. Likely I could then put the bodies away till Christmas and get the heads for the holidays if I could find inexpensive ones and asked nicely. In the end I might finally have my two resin BJDs for the cost of shipping, and who knows? If DOA ever gets back to me I might just find used heads I like there for cheap before then...

I'm just trying to get an idea of what might look a bit like Luo or Bowie for the guy though. What is out there in the 1/4 range that might fit or that I might want to look for new or used. I know I don't like the Miro heads. I'd prefer to end up with a more mature looking set of BJD's than not but Iplehouse that's clearly looking to be out of my range. If I am only going to have two I just want to do this right and I admittedly I know next to nothing about BJD's, the makers, the sculpts et all. Knowing me I'd buy the wrong sized head for the bodies or the wrong skin tone or something...

Any suggestions put them here? I'd be very happy to see them. I'm looking at two NS Miro doll bodies 1/4 size. I don't think I want the white, do I? I would think that yellowing would show more on white dolls, and I don't intend them to be paranormal beings besides, just regular people. They will be displayed and played with. I don't have a lot of natural light in here but there is some from lamps and such. I'll probably put them on a shelf but they'll have a curtain behind them and around them to shield them from most light when I am not playing with them. I do like to be able to look over and look at my dolls though and likely I'll have them with me at the computer a lot too. I do tend to have a few dolls sitting around as I work. They'll be photographed a fair bit too. I want to use them as models for practice shooting.

One thing I did note while looking. The Miro dolls NS just says natural skin but a lot of the doll heads I've seen they say pink NS or yellow NS. I'm not sure which is quite right for a Miro doll. Setsuna said "peachy" and I do get that it's a bit like the "bloom" light beige skin tone from Tonner. I have 2 Tonner dolls with that shade of skin so I think I get how it looks, but what some of the other makers say is NS pink or NS yellow and if so which one would that be? It would be just like me to pick a wrongly colored head and end up with dolls that have yellow heads and pink bodies or vice versa, laugh, and I don't see "light beige" or "peach" as an option with some of the heads I am seeing that you can buy separately. I'm almost tempted to get the white for that reason but I've read there are issues even with different colors of white too...

Well, I'm not really going to be much help with the head advice, but I can tell you the Mirodoll NS is slightly paler than Hujoo Apricot.

I hope that helps ^__^
I have so many dolls that I can't fit all their names in my signature anymore. @__@

I got a used MSD Resinsoul head for $45 bucks and it fits my Mirodoll girl body perfectly. The resin match between BBB/RS and Miro are almost perfect, too. That goes for NS and WS. It's a good option if you're looking for a cheaper head. I also got a RS Xue head for my 1:3 Miro female body and it looks perfect, too. I think I paid $50 bucks for it.

The third one I got is the 1:3 male body, it's really thick though and the Crobidoll head looks "almost" too small on it. Plus the yellowish resin doesn't match at all.

The Mirodoll NS is 'NS-Pink' so if you have a choice, go for the pinkish NS rather than the yellowish.

For mature heads, AoD (Angel of Dream) has quite a few that are very adult looking and also Dollmore, though Dollmore is more costly.

We own at least 6 AoDs and love them all----because they are 'mature' adult looking sculpts. (However, they're all 1/3 scale, but I'm pretty sure their 1/4 scale are also adult-like.)

Thanks, that helps. I don't think I am going to be getting my Miro bodies anytime soon though. My brother and I both have credit cards through a particular credit union and that credit union will not work with Pay Pal. They will not process any payments for our credit cards if Pay Pal requests it and they will not link bank accounts or their credit cards to a Pay Pal account so opening one won't help me much. It looks to me like Miro does use Pay Pal to process credit cards which is a problem. I had emailed them asking a question about their bodies before and I just emailed them a few days ago about the Western Union option or maybe using a Visa gift card if possible, but they have yet to reply to either email and FYI it's been a few days on the one request for info and over a month on the original email.

If they can't be bothered to answer my emails, and yes, I used the email on their site for customer service, than I can't very well buy doll bodies off them, now can I? I'm kind of wondering if maybe it's a language thing, if they just don't reply to English emails? Unfortunately I don't speak Korean or know anyone who does. I was hoping they'd reply before today. Their sale is over as of midnight. I guess it doesn't matter now. I'll just have to wait until next time they run a sale.

I think a Visa gift card would be a great idea to use with your PayPal next time. Also if you use PayPal to sell anything you have the choice to keep balance you made on the account or transfer it to your bank (if possible with yours). There are actually a few stores that will take PayPal in person now.
I'm mostly on Tumblr now.

They answered my email within a few hours; maybe they only respond to email addresses that have registered on their website. Or maybe your emails just got lost; they have been pretty busy lately.

I was over at Izabeth's tonight and saw a lovely boy that she is doing a faceup for. OK, I had seen him in pictures and I assumed he was a 70cm boy! NOPE!! He's an MSD!! So - here you are, the link to the MSDs from Lumedoll. He was gorgeous! And here's another good part - he's made in the US!! AND they do layaway!

Thanks for the link. What's interesting about these dolls is most of them seem to be offering a male and a female body option for the same head. Plus USA? No huge shipping costs? That's reason enough to keep an eye on the site. They're still a little pricey for me but at least they offer a slightly longer lay-a-way plan. I only see one doll currently offered that I kind of like. Most of the sculpts are kind of young for my tastes, but there are others in the gallery that I do like and I'm going to keep an eye on this site I think. Your friend's project doll how well is it made? Did you take a look? Just curious as to general quality of doll.
