If you want to start with something that is already BJD sized, you can also try Affordable Designs. He has a lot of SD patterns including a Kimono pattern and a princess dress. Just don't pay any attention to his "Kimono Class" that he advertises. I made the mistake of counting on that for instructions when it first came up and bought an MSD pattern. He posted the first set of instructions. It's now been, I believe four years and he's never finished it - however I believe that these days he includes all the instructions with the patterns. http://www.affordabledesigns.ca patterns can also be emailed to you in PDF format which is nice if you don't want to wait for the mail.

Also, when dealing with human to doll sizing, keep in mind that you dont' always need to do EVERYTHING the human pattern calls for. Depending on the fabric I use I don't always use interfacing when called for - the doll clothing doesn't need the stiffness (it's not like they are going out) and I don't always line everything either -particularly not if I'm making it for myself since in many cases all it does is add bulk that makes small clothing harder to fit.

Sewing machine? Oh yea, that's the thing on the floor that I never use LOL. I hand sew almost everything. takes longer, but I have much less frustration in the long run LOL.

I have been looking at his patterns ... I saw your comments about his kimonoklass never getting finished in the sewing thread you referrenced me to earlier in this thread

thanks ... I also remember learning that from my mom ... many long years ago she used to run her own doll store ... doing doll repairs, making soft sculpture type dolls (cabbage patch type), and making doll clothes ... she had her own "brand" if I remember correctly

LOL .... I'm afraid that if I didnt use a sewing machine I would never get anything done for Mio .......... all I do by hand is buttons ... and biker patches on a cut-off jeans jacket made into a vest


this is what I am contemplating doing as a first dress for Mio ......... I know, I can probably be considered certifiably insane

the medieval gown by Affordable Designs would be a good start to that design -- you'd have to tweak the armhole and sleeve, but you can probably fudge it from other patterns if you're an experienced sewer. Note: the Affordable Design patterns are very good quality but his DIRECTIONS assume you know what you're doing. They're not written for beginners.

Also his instructions for the Kimono are based on the real thing -- and there are easier ways to do some of those steps for a doll-scaled model.

But that being said, the patterns are very good.

LOL - maybe try a kimono first - they are obscenely easy to make since they are 99% straight lines! and they dont need to be fitted. Great confidence boosters for beginning sewers!

I'll take another look at their list of patterns ... though the pattern I have been considering I think is set up more for lower level ability like mine ... experienced at any sort of serious sewing I'm not

LOL yeah I probably would be better off trying a kimono first ... but for some reason that pattern I posted the pic of just wrapped itself around my head and wont leave ... so I'm going to give it a try ... I may regret it by the time I get locked away in a nice padded cell, but what the heck
