Vargas the Naga (x-posted @ JS)

Postby Trethowan » Wed Aug 31, 2011 9:18 pm

FINALLY!! It's been at least a year and I finally cobbled together the pieces it would take to make Vargas. I'm considering him a bit of a prototype, I still have plans of making the tail pose better. As it is now, it's just a plush. No armature.

He can lean on himself like a sofa-back. Hahaha...

The tail is a pair of 4-way stretch lycra leggings. I took the doll's feet off, they just stick out wrong and get in the way. There are O-rings in place of the feet to hold the elastic down. I left the legs on, they help with posing. I used simple stuffed-animal stuffing for the insides.

The body is Micah's original AoD type -2 body. The head is the Doll Leaves Xavor. I finally decided to pluck the sequins off. I really liked his face-up as is, so there is glue residue. It makes shiny spots. I tried scraping the glue gently, but it took off a piece of his face-up, so I left it alone after that. I'll come up with a solution later.

Image

You can probably see there under the eye a bit, how the light catches the glue residue. It's not so bad though, doesn't really show in pictures usually.

Image

Thanks to a Legolas action figure a friend didn't want, Vargas has some nifty looking weapons. He's a bit too much of a "fraidy-cat" to use them though.

Image

"the long shot." Yea, I know. Me and my silly puns.

Image

I love how the hands accentuate and give a good base for this pose. And I'm surprised his arms held it, they're a bit loose. Hehe...

The best part? There is a rattle in his tail. I used the prize egg Emory sent with one of my purchases, filled it 1/3 full with air-soft pellets, and taped it shut. I stuffed that down in the tail-tip to make the rattle. It sounds wicked. I love it.

Yay! I love Vargas. And it's true what they say about snakes, they're more afraid of you than you are of them.

Vargas looks great! I'm sure the rattle is a fantastic touch in person.

Wow! That's beautiful, Trethowan-san!!! He's gorgeous!!! When he slinks off on his hands, it really reminds of Medusa from Clash of the Titans (the 1980 original version---I've not seen the new remake.) .

He's so perfectly done!!!!!

:D Great job!!!

I loved the original. I have that on VHS. It's a fun movie. I like to watch the changes in cultural expectations from the 80's Hunks to the 2000's Hunks. The hot kind of guy in the 80's had flowing hair, full lips, and was just downright gorgeous. His motivation was to save the damsel in distress. Seemed like a pure sort of fellow, maybe. The hero of the new version is lean and over-muscled, way more aggressive, sported a militaristic buzz cut, and he was even a bit more surly. The pegasus went from white to black. I guess they thought a solid black horse was more bad-ass than the white one? Ha!

Oh, speaking of re-makes. (Me going way off topic. It's my thread. I can go OT if I wanna.) Remember Fright Night? The vampire had some serious 80's hair. And the similar pretty look. I am dying to see the remake; I want to know if the vampire is still lovely or if they've made him into something entirely different.

And... now, thank you! I'm a huge naga-fan, so it was really exciting to finally get this fellow finished. I love Medusa, she's wicked cool. I'd totally make a Medusa lady. I'd get a green Ai, make some snakes for the hair, and get her some wicked green snakeskin fabric. Oooh... project!

NO NO NO... no more temptations! Not another project! ;-p

Now you have me thinking of canibalizing the model kit I have of Medusa! I think she would be an MSD.

For Vargas, if you get the pop-apart teddy bear skeleton you can give him a spine! http://www.crscraft.com/products/vProduct1.asp?pid=Armature&L1=2&L2=12&L3=0&L4=0&L5=0&V2=1&V3=1&V4=0&T2=Category&T3=Style&T4=&cat=bear+supplies&sub=Fasteners&class=&searchOffset=x

You can buy it by the foot, it comes in several sizes!
