Dollfie dream broken neck! Any way to fix?

Postby -T2P- » Sat Oct 15, 2011 3:45 pm

Well I just got back from a local doll show with an awesome find :D A dollfie dream II body for $20!!! I literally could not believe it when she said $20! I could barely use the ATM after words I was so excited! :o

It's stainless and everything is in perfect shape except upon closer examination the neck appears to be broken :( My main question is. Is there anyway I can fix this?

Image

I went ahead and took her bust off to look at the neck and these are all the pieces that came with it. Is there a piece missing and if so is there anyway I could jury rig it so I could still use a dollfie dream head?

If there is no way to fix this neck piece i'd like to mod the neck to be able to take an obitsu designer head though i'm not sure how to go about that either :?

If worse comes to worse i could always order a new neck piece from cool cat but it feels kinda funny buying a neck piece that costs more then I paid for the whole doll itself

I've only had two DD2 bodies with neck connectors (no heads) and I promptly disassembled them to put Obitsu heads on them. So even though I have DD2 parts here, I don't have one assembled to photograph.

Find a twist tie from a bread bag and slip it through the open end of the small spring about half way. Twist it a couple of times so it doesn't come off by itself (we'll be taking it off later). Thread both free ends of the bread tie into the round sleeve as indicated by the arrow. You'll notice the inside edge of the larger end of the sleeve is beveled to accept the round ball. Next, fit those parts on to the top of the part sticking out of the top of the body (we'll be calling this the bottom neck part). The bread tie should fit through the groove in the front of the bottom neck part. Next cut a small piece of coat hanger wire. You'll have to figure out how long to cut it by reading the next direction. Pull the bread tie so the bottom of the spring is exposed through the bottom neck part. Slip your piece of coat hanger wire through the loop in the spring and release your pull on the bread tie (where it says wire "hook" on spring here). Remove the bread tie.

So I took my two DD2s apart to try and get a better photo and the parts on one have been modified beyond usefulness and the parts on the other are completely different. No help there so we're going to use your photo.

There isn't a conventional "hook" for the coat hanger wire to go around. The piece of coat hanger wire is just a little bar that fits in the larger area of the bottom neck piece. It just has to prevent the spring from going back into the round collar.
The resolution is a bit low, but does this help?

Alternately, you could use the bread twist tie, leaving it in the spring's loop, then wrap the two ends around the narrow part of the bottom neck piece (below the red bar in the picture). The twist tie won't be as durable as the thicker coat hanger wire, but it would work. The idea is to hold the bottom loop of the spring under some tension, keeping the parts above it in place.

Thanks so much for the help. Those photos are brilliant! Unfortunately I sorta bent the spring loop end out of shape somehow X_x; I'll probably just end up buying a replacement neck from coolcat. I've really become attached to this dollfie body and I've definitely decided to make her into a character! I took her completely apart cleaned her and re-aligned her internal skeleton and she poses like a dream now :D I'm so happy!

There seem to be a lot of aftermarket DD neck replacements (metal, plastics, etc.) around, which leads me to believe that part/assembly breaks a lot.
If the spring is bent, try getting some needle nose pliers and keep bending.

FYI, If you're interested in using an Obitsu head on the DD2, you can push the Obitsu neck piece into the top of the DD2 neck. It is a very snug fit and the neck piece won't attach to the skeleton, but the neck is more than strong enough to support just about any Obitsu head.
