Technically no, they do not fit. This is because the of how the vinyl (upper arm and lower arm) are shaped around the joint. The double joint will fit mechanically (all the skeletal pieces are correct) but it would require some vinyl trimming. If you want to accomplish this joint swap without getting out the xacto knife, you would need to replace the two vinyls (60RP-F01WS-26 and 60RP-F01WS-27) and the elbow joint (60RP-F01WP-31). The shoulder joint and wrist joint are the same on both the double slide and the ball joint style bodies.
The same goes for the knees except you would also need a set of the "leg bones" (60RP-F01WP-26) for each leg as well as the vinyls.

So is it possible to replace the regular joints with the doubles? Or is this a really stupid idea and I should just buy the regular joints?

It's not a stupid idea. The double slide joints have a greater range of motion (they bend farther) than the ball joint style joints, they just don't look as good. One of my girls has two sets of arms, a ball joint set for short sleeve attire and a double joint set for long sleeves.

Can't you glue the arm on or is it too close to the elbow?

Grab a hair dryer and heat the heck out of the vinyl; take a set of needle nose pliers, use those to stretch the vinyl slightly to be able to grab the peg (with the pliers) and pull the sucker out.

Don't glue it, there isn't much leeway in there, you run the risk of gluing the arm into one piece. Even if you only get the peg, the bond will be really weak.

To get a 55cm with the sliding/hinge joints, it would have been cheaper (but not really easier) to get a 60cm, swap out the torso pieces and then shorten the legs. Essentially, that's what I ended up doing to Omi. Except he was shortened to the point that he's a wee bit smaller than the 50cm obitsu. ^.~

Though, while you are thinking of improving your boy's mobility... I'd suggest getting the spine from a 50cm in there. It redistributes stress better and is less prone to breakage.
