Introducing Mary

Some of you know that I did the book "Resin Life: Snapshots of Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls", but what you may not realize is that in Real Life, most of the people I come in contact with about the book are NOT familiar with these dolls, have no idea what they are about, etc. They always ask "So do you make these dolls?" even though it CLEARLY says in the beginning what these dolls are about. I have given lectures, slide shows, and also had an exhibit of my photos, and people "Outside the Hobby" have kind of a hard time grasping it.

So I decided to make my own doll and that way sidestep the first question. Later I will post progress photos of how this all developed. It took me about four months to just make the HEAD!!! So i decided for the time being to put her on a store-bought body. I have many different brands of bodies, and I find that Angel of Dream bodies post really well.

After making the head in LaDoll airdry clay, I had a plaster copy made (long story, not what I wanted). I refined that a bit more, then shipped it off to Gerald, Zirconmermaid's husband (and maker of the kitty cat ears). He made me two copies- one to put on now, and another one to keep refining. I spent a couple of days sanding, and then did a fast (and kind of craptastic) face-up. It was a bit early, but I was so excited to get the actual resin head I couldn't wait. I will probably wipe this face-up, sand more, and then redo it.

Anyway- here is Mary, named that because when I was a little girl, every doll I owned was named Mary. The light wasn't great and my battery was dying, so these are really fast shots.

VERY nice!! I like it! She has a certain "otherworldly" quality! Also the medal is a nice touch.

If you hadn't dsaid you had sculpted the head yourself, I'dve wondered which manufacturer had done the head!

VERY COOL!!

she kind of reminds me of Sally the doll from the movie May. Nicely done!

Thanks! I'm too close to this still to be objective, so I appreciate the nice comments! I switched her eyes back to dark grey and definitely like those better than the light green. Today I'll redo her mouth and try to get some more pictures of her.

Oh she's very lovely, Cirquemommieh! One of these days, I'll try to sculpt a large head. But for now, I'll admire yours. XD

Thank you Mica and OkamiKodomo!

I have always been a 2-D artist, have never done any 3-D stuff. All I can say is that it was a humbling experience! I started working on this head in January. I have "evolution" pictures and will resize them and post them at some point, as soon as I round them all up.

My plan is to do a body, too, but at this rate it'll take me until about 2050 to get it done!

Mary has a nice symmetry to her face. I really like picture 7-she has a lovely Madonna (classical painting Madonna) quality in that picture. I have carved wooden dolls, getting symmetry is hard. Nice work.
