1930s Cloche

They're too sexy for their clothing - but they have to wear them anyway! Did you buy it? Did you make it? Who cares - let'm strut their stuff here!

I love the lining. It's a great detail. What sort of fabric is that? It kind of gives the impression of being a tiny houndstooth fabric.

Thanks! I've made human hats before and use the same techniques when I make doll hats. A good reference is "From the Neck Up."

The outside of the hat is made of brown tropical weight wool and the facing of the brim is a wool blend in grey salvaged from some thrift store women's dress pants. It is a plaid fabric but the larger plaid pattern is too big to show in something as small as the hat.

The hat band is petersham ribbon, 3/8" wide.

On the inside, there is a facing of bias buckram around the base of the crown to give some shape, and the plain grey acetate lining (salvaged from the same pants) is finished with some more petersham for an interior hat band.

I was able to do all the major construction on the machine. I used the end of my sleeve ham (a tailoring item for pressing sleeve seams) to help press the curved seams and then I blocked the hat a little bit with my steam iron over a washcloth-covered stryofoam ball.

I'm planning to make some in cotton prints but have to find my cotton organza first to interline the pieces to give them some body.
