Dollmore Dona - 12" Basic Gem (ABS)

Postby ShortNCuddlyAm » Sun May 19, 2013 7:14 am

She arrived, and appears to be called Arabella :)

She came in a plastic box covered in a layer of thin bubble wrap inside a rather too large cardboard box. As well as a certificate she came with a manual on how to (re)string. Sadly, the manual is entirely in Korean (although the diagrams are clear) and appears to be for a different doll (the pics show a standard headcap type head whereas this one has a faceplate)
So - front and back nude pics:

And a close up of the knees:

She comes with high heel feet, so I also got her a pair of flat feet (and eyes, wig and clothes). Her knees have notches in the back to help with posing. Her legs are single jointed, arms are double jointed with a swivel point just below the shoulders. Her torso is jointed just under the chest - a little higher than I prefer, but better than none at all. She seems maybe a bit tightly strung, but stands solidly (with her flat feet on - I have no heels to try her high heel feet with), and her arms mostly keep their position. She is a lot more busty than I was expecting - I will need to make some adjustments to her clothes so it's not so much of a fight getting them on (I'm mostly planning on making the tunic open all the way down the back and fasten with velcro. I think I have some fabric that matches well enough that I could make the back slightly bigger, too.)
The faceplate was a problem. When I unpacked her, it was loose, and I thought initially it was how the S hook had been put in as it wasn't in its grooves.
Image
But putting it back in didn't make much difference. So I ended up sanding down the back part of the head
Image and it fits a lot better now. There's still a gap, but the faceplate stays on and if I style the hair properly (or, y'know, just style it  ) it won't show.
Image
And finally a pic of her next to a 27cm Obitsu wearing and unfinished outfit and boots with a 4mm sole (the Basic Gem is 32cm high)

So far, I like her :)

Thanks for posting! Somehow it didn't occur to me that this model was strung (or at least partially strung, from what I understand the elbows of BJDs usually don't work like that?). I feel like if I got one she might become my "gateway doll" to BJDs. :D

I'm a bit curious about the range of motion in the knees and hips.

Not counting Obitsu dolls, BJD's usually are strung, and yeah that includes the elbows ;)

So a doll with an elbow joint like this one, do they count as a "proper" BJD or are they considered a kind of hybrid? (I'm not familiar with BJDs at all!)

She is a real BJD or Ball Jointed Doll. She is not allowed on Den of Angels because she doesn't fit all the criteria for being considered on topic for DOA. They limit their forum to a certain extent to keep it focused on specifically resin dolls. The more expensive resin version of this doll is actually on topic for them.

At the moment very limited - she's in trousers that have no give in them at all ;)

I'll try and get some more pics of her in different poses this weekend (or today is I really get things together - got the day off but suspect will mostly be not doing much at all  )
